The AG's office - what a difference a year makes

And what a difference an election makes. Just 14 months ago, about a month into his term, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen removed Wisconsin as a party to a suit against the EPA concerning emission standards for power plants. Van Hollen’s action of course, reversed that of his predecessor, Democrat Peg Lautenschlager.

An April 27, 2006 release from the office of the New York Attorney General, explains what Lautenschlager signed on to.

Ten state Attorneys General today sued the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to adopt strong emission standards to reduce air pollution from new power plants across the nation.... On February 27, 2006, EPA issued revised regulations in accordance with a court order. However, the revised standards completely fail to regulate power plant emissions of carbon dioxide, the major contributor to global warming. In addition, the revised standards for other air pollutants harmful to public health are unacceptably lax.

According to the Journal Sentinel in February, 2007, Van Hollen’s reversed policies because “it was not in the best interests of the state.” Candidate Van Hollen’s web site, included a somewhat more complete explanation, in April, 2006.

Peg Lautenschlager continues to engage in politically-motivated lawsuits across the country intended only to curry favor with liberal special interest groups. She wastes precious state resources to advance her outlandish set of priorities. The people of Wisconsin will be better served when we have an attorney general who is focused on fighting real crime here in Wisconsin.

Fast forward to today. Lo and behold, yesterday brought news of 18 states pressuring EPA to add to their list of duties the regulation of vehicular carbon dioxide emissions under the Clean Air Act.

Take note: Wisconsin is not one of those 18 states.

    COMMENTS

Jo, Please tell me what crime fighting priorities the AG should have? I think the "hang 'em high" attitude the public has today doesn't have a direct connection to the usual duties of the AG. The crimes that most citizens are effected by-or believe they are affected by- are prosecuted locally by the district attorney's office. Perhaps you know?

First commenter, Dave is right. The real crime is corporate crime against the best interests of the commons which we share.

I find it hard to understand why anyone would support someone as ignorant and mean spirited as Van Hollen on anything.

This mean spiritedness is what I've come to describe as the Small Petty and Mean Index to which I've referred more than once in this space.

When Van Hollen says strengthening the EPA is bad for Wisconsin he means it's bad for the corporate Wisconsin which put him in office. McGruff the Crime Dog has nothing to do with the off the street and behind closed doors justice system of which Van Hollen is an important part and player.

" This mean spiritedness is what I've come to describe as the Small Petty and Mean Index "

If you're going to describe something as an 'index', then by definition it has a scale to compare variables.

Please be good enough to publish this scale somewhere so the rest of us can see it.

If you can't do that then for the love o' pete please quite using the term 'scale' to describe a made-up bit of nonsense.

It's damned annoying to see technical terms abused by fools.
