Trust but ALWAYS verify - especially when rates are up 64%!

Public officials, employees and the consultants they hire are mostly really good people. Loyal workers and all of that. But when consultants for the City of Appleton put together a Water Rate Study meant to increase our water rates big time, not everyone connected with the study was paying attention.

And then again, Grand Chute was paying attention! For you see, the study asked Grand Chute residents to cough up 64% more for their water bills. Excuse me?

Well, as a result, Grand Chute officials contracted with engineering firm Ruekert-Mielke to scrutinize the rate study. Now, you’d assume, of course, Grand Chute was looking for the best firm to do the job. Somebody not afraid to question the status quo. Probably a firm completely independent, without extensive commitments in the Fox Cities. A professional firm that would do it right.

They did it right all right. And did a favor for all of us.

Under contract to Grand Chute, Ruekert-Mielke pointed out several significant errors in the Study.

As a result, Grand Chute’s water rates will increase not 64%, but 25%. Wow. That’s a pretty big deal. City of Appleton residential rate increases, originally announced at 25%, will probably end up in the area of 20 or 21%.

The October 30 letter documenting an agreement between the City of Appleton and Grand Chute is posted on the Public Service Commission’s web site. By agreeing to the 25% increase, Grand Chute withdrew the formal objection to the rate study that it had earlier filed with the PSC.

We’re still waiting to see final numbers, as reviewed and changed by the PSC. Grand Chute will of course, be ever diligent in working to be sure the resulting rates are in keeping with the “25% solution” negotiated with Appleton. Appleton staff and alderpersons will also be looking carefully at final proposed rate increases to make sure Appleton residents aren’t on the short end of the stick.

And this isn’t the end of it. These increases we’re talking about are just for one year. We’re supposed to expect 8% (or so) more the next year, 8% on top of that the next year and 8% still again on top of that the fourth year. Phew.

Stay tuned. Be vigilant! Scrutinize stuff the government tells you. Never be afraid to just raise your hand and ask the questions that need asking. Never be afraid to ask again and again until you get a thorough response. Trust, but always, always… verify.

Thanks for the heads up Jo. No way does the City of Appleton want anyone to know they are staffed, and advised by fools. Chances are this will never reach the Post Crescent.
