    I'm thankful for life

In a flurry of publications yesterday, the scientific world released a flood of awe-inspiring, breakthrough cell research.

If you read nothing else, read this press release by renowned ethicist, UW-Madison professor of law and bioethics, R. Alta Charo. She comments here on the “far-reaching effects on the social dimensions of the ongoing controversy over embryonic stem cell research…. The research alters the debates surrounding both human embryonic stem cell research and somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning.”

Here’s the UW-Madison’s press release on the work of James Thomson, “the scientist who first coaxed stem cells from human embryos in 1998.” Kathy Gallagher writes that WARF has applied for patents based on the stunning new research.

Today’s NY Times discusses the “ethically uncomplicated” science that reprogrammed skin cells to act like stem cells.

Here’s the Journal Sentinel’s take on the same news.

Here's WisBusiness' capture of elation from the business community.

Here's the Washington Post discussing how the breathtaking research may play politically for the White House.

Berry Laker blogger responds here with an “I-told-you-so” for Governor Doyle. Chris Schneider blogs here, with a cup full of tastelessness, about Governor Doyle’s rather inarticulate reaction, saying he favors “going wherever the science leads us” and that politicians should not be making decisions about where that is.
