    Rants and raves

It was fun news late last week when Tony Palmeri sent along a pre-press copy of his Media Rants column appearing in the December, 2007 edition of The Valley Scene.

When I wrote the first Tony Awards column in 2002, I never imagined it would become an annual tradition. But with corporate media in our region now bad beyond belief and getting worse each year, it has become vital to recognize worthwhile alternatives.

The challenge for 2008 is for all of us to pledge not only to consume more independent media, but also to become the media. If you’re reading this, you need to pledge to start a blog, write an original newsletter, get involved in community radio or television, take advantage of whatever space is allowed by the establishment media, or do something else to get yourself heard. You need to do this not so you might receive a Tony award next year, but because in speaking out you will help our sick democracy get well.

And now the 2007 Tony Awards. Drum roll, please:

Best Political Blogger: Jo Egelhoff, Fox Politics (www.foxpolitics.net). Appleton readers will know that Jo served as an alderperson on the common council from 1993-2003. There she developed a reputation for asking tough questions and getting answers. Jo’s a genuine conservative and I find myself frequently disagreeing with her. But her blogs are always well argued, provocative, and never substitute Republican Party talking points for independent thought and fresh insights. In other words, Jo leans right but she’s not a “right wing nut.” Her FoxPolitics website also includes oodles of information to help find out, as she says, “what’s really going on in the Fox cities.”

Ok, so Tony is an Associate Professor of Communication at UW Oshkosh and he’s supposed to know his media stuff. And he serves on the Oshkosh Common Council, so that means he can identify with getting down and dirty in the local grassroots. But… Tony ran as a candidate (54th Assembly District) for [drum roll please…] the Green Party!!! Oh my gosh Tony, that almost qualifies you as a “left wing nut!”

Well, left winger or not, and Green all over, Tony is a great guy and I’m thrilled to be included in the company of seven great 2007 Tony Award winners. Count me in to echo Tony’s encouragement to “consume more independent media” – and more than that “to become the media.” All of us, in “whatever space is allowed.” Hear, hear. Exactly right on. Thanks Tony…

Congratulations Jo! You deserve recognition for the wonderful job you do of consolidating the news. Also, really enjoy your commentary. You tell it like it is!

    CONGRATULATIONS JO!

You deserve it, you write a great blog and have keen insight to the political scene up here!

I also agree with Tony Palmeri. People need to do more than just consume news, analysis, and opinion - they should work at producing it too. The Internet and the blog engine make it much cheaper to at least get the word out. Of course, whether anyone wants to read is quite different, but the cost barrier to journalism is now pretty much gone.

Well, I do what I can at my own humble blog - 'Space4Commerce'. My niche is 'bird cage liner' and 'back page humor column when the regular guy calls in sick'.

Hey - we can't all be award winners like Jo. Someone has to fill in the content between the ads.
