Doyle - ethics reform? You've got to be kidding me

Jay Heck issued a call to action over the weekend for Governor Doyle to take on ethics reform. Linked on FoxPolitics News Monday, the article showed up in several papers throughout the state. Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin, doesn’t hide his extreme displeasure with the $30 million spent on this self same Governor’s freshly won re-election.

“Doyle must lead us toward political reform for his own legacy and because Wisconsin needs it – desperately,“ says Heck.

A Doyle legacy of political reform? How quaint. Actually, how downright shocking. Just after I read of the millions of Native American dollars finding their way to the Doyle campaign via the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic National Committee? (The funds took the long way around, so they were sure to avoid state campaign limits.)

Lead us toward political reform? Just after I read about Doyle administration bureaucrat Georgia Thompson starting off her 18 months in a minimum security prison in Illinois? She rigged the Adelman award all by herself?

Lead us toward political reform? Just after I read about the alleged sweetheart deal in which Doyle contributors were given a no-bid contract to build a controversial new UWM dorm?

    I could go on…..

This is not to say I don’t appreciate Heck’s vision. And when it comes to ethics in this state, Governor Doyle is certainly not the worst and certainly not the only offender. But by virtue of his position, he is one of the most visible. And yes, because he’s the state leader, he must lead.

But please Mr. Governor, don’t “lead” with that holier-than-thou approach politicians are wont to take. Be honest about how you and many others on both sides of the aisle game the system. And make sure you are the absolute ultimate model of purity on anything that might remotely be connected with pay-to-play. Yes, Governor Doyle, please, please take the lead.

    Jo,
Thanks for the news letter. Wish we ould do something about Doyle, we had a chance but the majority spoke.

Yeah, the Republicans had their chance and killed it in the Assembly (SB1). Doyle isn't clean but he is better than Green, who worked against reform when he was in the legislature and failed to lead in the House. So we are stuck hoping that if the Dems follow through with their promise and the Republicans don't again block it, we at least have a chance that it will be signed by Doyle. I agree with Jay Heck, it could mean his legacy.
