    Bash Jack Voight? Enought already!

Unbelievable. There is not a more loyal civil servant around. And even the AP wants to bash him. And Common Cause. And Spivak and Bice, who started it all. The Spice Boys. They are good. I enjoy their gumption and I enjoy their stuff. This time they went too far. They missed big time.

Ok, disclaimer. FoxPolitics readers know that I like State Treasurer Jack Voight, who was defeated in his bid for a 4th term. Jack is a fellow Appletonian, a friend and a very good person. I’ve said it all here before. He’s honest and he’s kind and he’s just a real straight arrow. Actually, that’s just what Jeff Wagner called him yesterday – "the ultimate straight arrow." A straight arrow in politics, no less.

You see, State Treasurer Voight and members of his senior staff are going to New Orleans to attend the National Association of State Treasurers annual conference. And Jack is getting raked over the coals because he’s a lame duck and is being accused of taking a vacation on the taxpayer’s dime.

    That is just not Jack.

Consider the other side of the story.

    • The trip for Secretary Voight is being paid by the National Association of State Treasurers, not by taxpayers directly.
    • Jack did not cancel his attendance at the conference after being defeated at the polls because he had business to finish for the people of Wisconsin.
    • Jack is bringing his 12 years of experience to bear in work with fellow State Treasurers, moving forward a uniform law for unclaimed property, not revised since 1985.
    • Jack is working with Congressman Dave Camp, (R) Michigan, on a bill (H.R. 5984) that will release unclaimed U.S. Savings Bonds to a state’s unclaimed property program. (Can you believe that’s not done?) Passage of the bill would be worth $300 million to Wisconsinites alone.

Ok, enough of this arcane stuff, already. Do we need an elected State Treasurer? Geez, I don’t know. Is it a full-time job? I don’t know that either. But here’s what I do know. If the press and the think tanks continue with this drum roll of ethics, ethics, ethics (which well they should), they darn well better discern when, once in a while, a man or woman of good character is around – and refrain from taking pot shots at the guy.

Jack is an honest, sincere, well-intentioned civil servant. He is our State Treasurer until January 3, 2007. He is trying to do the right thing in finishing out his responsibility to the state’s taxpayers. The easiest thing for Jack to do would be to blow off this conference. Not a chance. Jack will fulfill what he believes is his commitment to you and to me. Believe it. He is the real thing.

    COMMENTS

It is not entirely being paid for by the fund you describe. It is being paid for out of the proceeds of the unclaimed property fund and the Edvest fund. That's public money.

He's only contributing to the bad name his party has right now, and hurting his own reputation. He should cancel the trip.

I have known Jack Voight for many years. I believe that he is one of the most honest and straightforward people that one could ever meet. In my opinion, we are losing one of the best State Treasurers ever to serve the people of Wisconsin. For those of you that have not met Jack Voight, well try to do so as soon as you can. Life can be short. For those of you that like to bash Jack and others like him; well my guess is that you just don't know jack!
