    12/1/2006
YOU - (WE) - ARE the government!

    Today is the day
To get off of the couch
    Stop yelling “gol’ darn it”
    Stop being a grouch.

    Take all your ideas
Take them out of the blog
    Take them downtown
Force them out of the fog.

Take them to the Hall –
The Hall of City it’s true
    You could make a difference
    “Who me?” Yes, just you!

Yes! Today, December 1, 2006, is the first day you can get signatures on your nomination papers! You can head to your city hall, town hall, village hall, county clerk or school district, where friendly faces will walk you through the process of “taking out papers.” (Here’s the City of Appleton info. Call your own municipal or county clerk for details.)

Many Wisconsin communities will elect or re-elect local representatives on April 3, 2007. You elected officials out there (thank you for serving our communities!) - you know all about this – so let it serve as a reminder to you to pick up your papers (if you haven’t already) for a repeat run at your seat – and as a push to convince more folks just like you to participate in your community.

For any of you who’ve not run for an office in the past, when you “take out papers,” you must then gather (for many local offices) a mere 20 signatures. Not many! Ok – ask your friends and your family. But make yourself knock on lots of doors for a signature – people you don’t know.

Do you have to know what you’re doing? Well, eventually. But for now, what you need is a passion for good and wise government and a passion for the freedoms we cherish – and sadly, all too often, take for granted.

Ok, it’s a bit corny, but when I think about participating in local government I can see the times I’ve returned to the U.S. of A from Russia, from China – and literally kissed the ground at the airport. I think too of my English class in China. I was going through a mock council meeting, trying to walk and talk through only the basics of our representative and free form of government. The faces were blank. Completely blank. As you’d guess, these young and not-so-young adults had no concept of ever, ever participating in their government.

    We are so very blessed.

So… get those nomination papers taken out and completed – by 5:00 p.m. January 2. if you need a push, advice, a friendly ear, even a bit of campaign advice.... holler.

Awesome way to may a very important point!! Thanks Jo!! What we take for granted -- our privilege to have a say in government decisions could become a distant memory if WE don't become involved where we can. I see evidence of our right to govern ourselves eroding on a monthly basis. If we have concerns, we need to be persistent -- until we have asked enough people enough questions we won't know how we can serve!! Start somewhere! Make that first call! LS

OK now, Jo, can we be looking forward to seeing your nomination papers being filled out?

Looks like you were inspired by Dr. Seuss for this blog, Jo. Who wouldn't be inspired to sign up for an elected official position when it sounds like so much fun?
