A politician is a good person?

Say “politician.” What’s the first word that comes into your mind? Teaching a Sunday School class the other day, part of what I was doing was searching for negative reactions to certain professions. You know, used car salesperson, lawyer, politician… that kind of thing (no offense meant!).

I was taken aback just a bit when I said "politician" and the first responses were “people person” and “motivated to do the common good.” I fished a little more. “Starting point of the life of a leader.” “Outgoing personality.” “Must get rewards, positive reinforcement.” (Don’t we all need positive reinforcement?) “They have a belief they can get it done.”

Wow. Let’s keep going with the positive… How about brave and courageous, forthright, strategic, tough. How long ago was it that politicians were considered honorable?

Wikipedia says: “A politician is an individual who is a formally recognized and active member of a government, or a person who influences the way a society is governed through an understanding of political power and group dynamics. This includes people who hold decision making positions in government, and people who seek those positions, whether by means of election, coup d'etat, appointment, electoral fraud, conquest, right of inheritance (see also: divine right), or other means.”

Hmm. I don’t know about the coup d’etat, fraud and conquest parts, but the rest of it sounds pretty positive. Well, other than the bottom of the Wikipedia page that says “See political corruption.”

Dishonest, corrupt, hypocritical, insincere, deceptive. Saul Bellow called them “a bunch of yo-yos.” I’m sure each of us could add more.

But as new legislative sessions get under way in just a few short weeks, we are forced to entrust the people’s business to our politicians.

Most of you are indeed good people, and we the people must start from the premise that you occupy those hallowed halls because you truly want to do what you deem best for the common good.

We want to trust you. We ask you to be courageous and strategic. Decisive too. But most of all, we ask you to hold to your principles, to know what’s right and what’s wrong. And “Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching.” Thomas Jefferson
