Nationally renowned brain scientist, May 13
APPLETON, WI— Fox Cities’ parents, educators, childcare providers and interested community residents will have the unique opportunity to learn first-hand just how important early learning and brain development are during the first five years of a child’s life as the Appleton Education Foundation (AEF) welcomes Dr. Richard Davidson to the Appleton East High School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, to wrap up its popular new Community Education Series—Brain to Five. Davidson was originally scheduled to kick off the series in February, but his appearance was cancelled due to a severe winter storm. His presentation is free to the public on an open-seating basis. Overflow seating will also be available at Appleton East, a new venue for the last presentation in the series.
Dr. Davidson, named one of the world’s most influential people by Time magazine in 2006, will present Shaping Your Child’s Brain, highlighting the intricacies of early brain development as a part of a first-of-its-kind partnership between the AEF, UW-Madison’s renowned Waisman Center and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. The partnership has brought Davidson and three other leading “brain investigators” from the Waisman Center to the Fox Cities community for the groundbreaking series.
Davidson, featured scientist in the March 2008 issue of O The Oprah Magazine and named Madison Magazine’s 2007 Person of the Year, will provide an inside look at brain development, describing how a baby’s brain develops and changes throughout life. He’ll share his findings on brain studies of normal children and those at risk for affective disorders such as depression and anxiety. He’ll also explain how children regulate their emotions and the incredible advances in brain imaging to explore and understand how our kids’ brains function in an easy-to-understand presentation and question-and-answer format.
Davidson’s fellow researchers Dr. Susan Ellis Weismer, Dr. Jenny Saffran and Dr. Seth David Pollak, all noted for their expertise and studies related to brain behavior and learning preceded Davidson with series presentations in March and April.
In talking about his work, Davidson noted, “One of the amazing things about the work I do is I get to look inside people’s brains virtually everyday. That’s still an amazing experience and one I am humbled by.”
AEF Executive Director Julie Krause said planning for the speaker series has helped bring many Fox Cities resources together – including educators, childcare agencies, funding organizations and businesses – into one dialogue and the hope is that this community-wide momentum will lead to heightened awareness of early childhood learning and the importance of brain development. She noted the birth-to-five movement is gaining significant steam nationwide and Appleton and the Fox Cities have great potential to take a leading role in Wisconsin. She also said that another benefit of the Foundation’s efforts is to generate greater community awareness of the Appleton Area School District’s (AASD) birth-to-five initiatives, which encompass ten key objectives. “Our partnership with UW-Madison has been a big step toward a stronger emphasis in our community on this important topic,” Krause said. “As the AASD and other area school districts grow their birth-to-five programs, the partnership can play a major role in allowing us to tap current thinking and future trends.”
About Richard J. Davidson, Ph.D. Fascinated by how the mind works since he was a teen, Dr. Davidson has worked with the Mind and Life Institute and traveled to India to complete brain studies with the Dalai Lama and monk community. His credentials include: Ph.D., Harvard; Director, Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior; Vilas Professor, Psychology and Psychiatry.
About the AEF Established in 1997 by parents and community leaders in the Fox Cities, the Appleton Education Foundation provides classroom teachers accessible, flexible resources to enhance student learning. Just starting its second decade, the AEF has supported a variety of innovative learning projects and awarded over one million dollars in funding to educational programs that aren’t financed by public budgets.
About the Waisman Center For 34 years, the Waisman Center has been dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases. The center houses 60 laboratories, including the renowned Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, ten specialty clinics and numerous early intervention and outreach programs. The Waisman Center is one of the most remarkable research facilities in the world and is a place for discovery, care and learning as it develops new therapies and treatments for people with developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases.
