Rep. Mark Gundrum: On Memorial Day
I appreciate the opportunity to reflect with you upon this most solemn occasion of Memorial Day.
Serving these past few months in Iraq has afforded me the opportunity to reflect more deeply than ever upon the profound sacrifices the men and women of our Armed Forces have made throughout the past 230 years. Our great Nation gained its independence and strength - and maintains its independence and strength - because of so many Americans willing to put their lives at risk for our country. Many of those service members have made the ultimate sacrifice - for us.
And for every service member killed on the field of battle, there is a grieving wife, husband, son, daughter, mother, father, or other loved ones left behind, with their sorrow tempered only by the pride of knowing that every American loses his life at some point, but their American gave his life for all of us.
So, as everyone enjoys the day off from work this Monday and spends important time with family, please remember to take some time in reflection for those fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate price for us and for the heroic families who have had to bear that loss.
