Wigderson: Blog because you can make a difference

Occasionally I get asked, why do you blog? My wife and I joke that if I didn’t blog about politics, I would be blogging about something else. And it’s probably true. I would write about my dogs or outdoor firepits or something. Part of the reason to blog is the enjoyment of writing, being able to express yourself and seeing it instantly published for anyone else to read. When I can successfully “turn a phrase” and make a point nobody else is making in a clever way, that is a definite reward of blogging.

When I began blogging, I began with something I know pretty well – politics. I quickly learned that there were many well-established national blogs and I needed to find a niche if I was ever going to be read. Local politics became that niche. At the time, there were only two other blogs in Waukesha. Neither of them was covering local politics in Waukesha.

Now there are at least 20 blogs in the Waukesha area, and even our mayor started a blog briefly. Many of them will come and go (most blogs have very short lifespans), but most of them have an impact on how our city is run.

I like to tease our alderman if he knew what he was getting into with so many bloggers in his district.

And I’ve discovered I have some influence at the state as well on issues like ethanol, taxes, and gay marriage.

How can that be with only 200-300 readers per day? But it is who is reading that counts. Newspapers like to know what issues are out there, and their reporters follow the blogs. Local government officials like to know what is being said about them. News junkies are always looking for a fix. Democratic and Republican party leaders follow the blogs to hear what their bases are saying.

If you start blogging tomorrow, will you have an immediate impact? Probably not. But over time your readership will build. Then you can have the experience of walking into a meeting of your aldermen and have one of them pull you aside, “I have a bone to pick with you.”

If you have a local blog or are thinking of starting one, I would love to hear of your experiences and what you have gotten out of blogging. Maybe you hated it and quit. I want to hear that story, too.

James Wigderson blogs regularly at Wigderson Library & Pub.
