    A reader's perspective: Appleton West's 'experiment'

The Post Crescent this week included a story about a new parking lot built for over $700K by the Appleton Area School District for the purpose of providing off street parking for Appleton West High School students. The article repeatedly stated that this parking lot was built as an experiment to see if students will actually use it.

    WHAT??
West Principal Greg Hartjes ... notes this is uncharted territory. "This is the first time we've done anything like this. We have a plan, but we don't know how well it will work," he said.

…. Courtney Danielski, 16, ... isn't too happy about the lot's distance from West. If she walked from home, it would take her about 10 minutes, she said, so this isn't much of an improvement. "Once I heard where they're building it I was over using it. They say it's a four-minute walk (from the lot to school) but what about the days when I'm late or when it's cold? I'm not going to walk that."
    Or to be fair, this...
Junior Danielle Laurent, 16, is all for the parking lot. "I won't mind. It was hard to find spots on the streets. We have the option of assigned spots. To be assured a spot every day is worth it," she said.
    But then, this.
West neighbor Audrey Deprez said she has lived at 614 N. Douglas St. for 60 years and watched plenty of students park on her block… "I would be very surprised if they park in that lot because it's just more convenient for them to park on the street," she said.
So the school district spent $700K on a parking experiment. Why not do what most schools do – actually require students who drive to use the lot? I know of schools which require students to purchase a parking permit to be able to drive a car to school at all.

Oh, I forgot, it's only money and for schools, there's more where that came from.

    COMMENTS

My thoughts exactly, Phyllis. Where is the discipline to make that lot plan work? No wonder we have fitness issues with young people today: no one is making them do anything, let alone walk a block or two more to help the neghborhood. I think the whole scene at West, beginning with the athletic field/tear-down-the-houses issue is convoluted and not at all necessary! You're right again: it's only money. Nothing is too good for the Appleton taxpayer.
