Solberg: 2008 GOP confab "habla Espanol" to youth

Over 45,000 delegates, alternate delegates, members of the media, and other guests are expected to attend next weeks Republican National Convention at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. This convention being referred as “the center of the Political Universe” will begin on Monday, Sept. 1. The party celebrated its’ 154th anniversary last July. Republican Deputy Press Secretary Yohanna De La Torre shared that from the party’s humble beginnings in Wisconsin and Michigan, the party has blazed a path of leadership and change that continues to be seen to this day.

Historically, “The Party of Lincoln” held the Nation together and healed her after the Civil War, then it led the way in granting women and minorities the right to vote. The path has continued to be seen in modern times through the winning of the Cold War, and the protection of our nation from the threat of terror.

“We are very excited to say that this year the convention will reach millions more around the world thanks to our technological efforts through our convention website and our partner, USTREAM.TV. Through this new and innovative feature, the conventions events will be streamed gavel to gavel in both English and Spanish in real-time, as well as providing a behind-the-scenes look at the operations and events of the convention,” stated De La Torre, Deputy Press Secretary for Specialty Media, Republican National Convention.

Youth will be a very important group represented at this year’s Convention. Some of the young groups represented will be The College Republicans, Page Program, Lead America, Jr. Statesmen Center, Annenberg School of Communications, Young Republicans lead by: Jessica Colon, and The Washington Center.

Matthew Terrill of Wisconsin and Jose Cabrera of Puerto Rico will be leading the way as Pages. Originally of Southeast Wisconsin, 19- year old Terrill was nominated and accepted to the Convention Page program. It will be his first time attending the National Republican Convention.

“I have always been involved in politics. I first got involved in Middle school and High school it was at a grassroots level with different campaigns. Being involved at an early age helped me understand the process. I am honored to have an opportunity to go,” added Terrill. He believes that when youth get involved at a grassroots level it teaches them to understand how hard ordinary citizens work for the electoral process they believe in.

The United States has been called a “Nation of Immigrants,” in turn the Republican National Convention will highlight great minority leaders at their event. Again, De La Torre: “America is a melting pot of diversity. This year’s Republican National Convention is gearing up and working to reach out to the diverse population of our nation. I personally deal with various constituencies including African Americans, Arabs, Asians, Hispanics, Women & Family, Military and many more. This diversity is what America20is all about and together on September 1 – 4, the Republican Party will unite in one of the most historic events and prove its support and excitement of our diverse nation,” continued the Deputy Press Secretary.

According to De La Torre, this year’s convention is engaging the youth vote with one of the most technologically savvy conventions in GOP history. New technology like USTREAM.TV, live video is being streamed and making it easier to provide live coverage of the convention to online users. The use of social networks like MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and USTREAM.TV are also allowing us to maximize our ability to reach as many people around the country as possible. “The youth has a critical interest in the direction of our nation. Through active involvement, their voice is being heard. With Senator John McCain and his positive message for America , the future of our youth is being paved,” she continued

Streaming coverage will be available through the Convention Website.

Solberg is a nationally published political columnist , Former Federal Drug Communities Commissioner and Hispanic activist. She resides in New London Wisconsin.
