Lasee: Thought process of lefties is of great interest

After writing about the fact that our tax dollars crowd out private giving to nonprofit organizations, it got me thinking about Oprah Winfrey and her school in South Africa. Oprah wanted to help educate children and she first looked in the United States.

Oprah is reported to earn $275 million a year, before taxes. It is reported that she is worth about a billion dollars. If she wanted to help more, she could have written an additional check to the United State government. She could have let the government use more of her money. Instead, she wanted to make sure her money was well spent and actually made a difference in real kids’ lives.

Oprah visited inner-city schools in the United States and what she says about her experience is disturbing:

"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there. If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

Oprah decided to spend her money on education outside the United States. She decided to help those who really wanted to learn. She didn’t want her money wasted or put to little good use.

Oprah spent $40 million to create a school for girls in South Africa. (No boys, isn’t that discrimination?) Just to prove that no good deed ever goes uncriticized, media has called the school lavish, elitist, ultra-posh and too strict. The girls are not allowed to use cell phones on school nights or have junk food treats. That sounds oppressive to me.

What is more interesting is Oprah’s politics. She is a liberal. She supports liberal politicians who want our government to do more, create more programs and expand programs we already have.

In case Oprah wants to send our government more money, the Treasury department accepts checks. Oprah, or anyone else, can make a check payable to the Bureau of the Public Debt. It isn’t very exciting to pay down the debt, but it is the responsible thing to do. This would help future American generations.

The thought process of lefties is of great interest to me.

Frank Lasee is a Republican and represents the 2nd Assembly District.

    COMMENTS

Nothing can enhance the future of our great nation, than the education of it's people.
Just as I have ideas on educational opportunity, so does Oprah.
Without desire, there is no hope !
It is "desire" that makes those achieve beyond their wildest dreams.
It is desire that wins on the football field, or most importantly, the game of life.
I see no efforts by Liberals to create such desire.
They always point to "inequeties" as the reason for failure, and never realise that some of the most profound achievements have been in the face of total inequity.
How does an ugly actor, make it in Hollywood ? does he get special dispensation?
How does a fireman fight for Your Life, with a 125 pound sack on his back ? It doesn't slow him down when he is needed !
Why can a man in a wheelchair go across the entire United States, using only his hands ?

The answer my friends is Desire , pure and simple.
The poor kids in the ghetto have no desire, because they don't know what it is, and Liberals with money want new schools and fancy uniforms, not knowing that it reflects the only desire such poor kids have if they do have it, which is a pair of NIKE shoes

They do these things because they feel that it is right.
Feelings are not logical--and that is why the casinos are so rich. They learned long ago, that "feelings" lead one to make false assumpions and makes you loose
    Smarten up Oprah !
You despair over real life in the California schools, get in and change it ..That is "IF" you have the DESIRE !
