Lasee: Are we sitting with our heads in the sand?

Fortunately, there has been more interest in building or expanding nuclear power plants in Wisconsin. Just so you know, the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant is located in my district. In addition to being a low cost electric supplier, it provides many good paying jobs.

Nuclear power provides 14% of the electricity used in Wisconsin and 20% of the electricity generated in the United States, according to the United States Department of Energy. What could it be if we were really serious about this source of electricity. The Chinese are.

It is a clean fuel (except for the spent nuclear fuel). It is interesting that despite being a green energy (very little pollution and no green house gases), the lefties generally don’t like nuclear at all. The thought processes of lefties (or is it the feel process?) are interesting.

An application to open Yucca Mountain to store spent nuclear fuel is now pending before the Nuclear Registry Commission (NRC). They will make a decision in the next months or years. I have visited Yucca Mountain and think it is a great place to store spent nuclear fuel until some brilliant young scientist (maybe old) figures out a great use for it. Or maybe we change the federal law and do what the French do.

The socialist French get 75% of their electricity from nuclear. They recycle their spent nuclear fuel. France’s leadership in nuclear power is a result of a long-standing policy of energy independence. (Novel concept, the United States should try it.) In fact, France is the world’s largest net exporter of electricity largely because of the low cost and availability of nuclear electricity.

The United States military is building a recycling facility for military grade uranium and plutonium. Perhaps they could sell their recycled product to new or existing nuclear power plants (in France or China?). Kind of like turning bombs into electricity.

In 1983, Wisconsin outlawed new nuclear power plants. The technology has improved since then. This session, I voted in favor of lifting the ban which passed the Assembly. The Democratic Senate refused to give the bill a hearing. It is uncertain that the Governor would have signed it into law.

The Governor’s Task Force on Global Warming recommended that Wisconsin lift the ban and consider new nuclear power plants for Wisconsin.

WISC-TV reports the Governor as saying, “I don’t think we should be sitting with our heads in the sand.”

Initially, the Governor cleverly sounded like he was in favor of lifting the ban. What he really said was modifications (whatever that means) should be made. According to Htrnews.com he quickly retreated by saying “his oft-used line that no nuclear power plant has been built in the country in 30 years and Wisconsin would not be the first place one goes up.”

What will he say after other states take the lead again? (Click here for applications pending.)

Nuclear costs a lot less than wind (believe it or not!) and works better on the electric grid. An added benefit is that it does not get in the way of kites or birds and the fish like it.

Frank Lasee is a Republican and represents the 2nd Assembly District.
