Solberg: For Hispanics, McCain is the only choice

November’s election will decide whether issues important to Hispanics are represented in Washington or simply fall on deaf ears. Business growth, free trade, family values, personal responsibility and immigration reform are just some of the issues important to Latinos and ones on which Senator John McCain has a proven track record that deserves our support.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has said “the number of Hispanic businesses has increased and will only continue to grow. Hispanics constituted the largest minority business community and own 6.6 percent of all U.S. firms.” The number of Latino businesses are expected to grow 7.6 percent annually to 3.2 million by 2010 .Hispanic businesses are “among the fastest growing segments of our economy.”

For over 25 years John McCain has been a leader and a friend to Hispanics. His home state of Arizona, a state with a large Hispanic population is a testimony to this. In his last senate election, he obtained more than 70 % of the Latino vote. Both Senator McCain and Governor Palin are proven leaders whose public lives demonstrate that people come first over special interests.

John McCain will stand with Hispanics who stand for family values and personal responsibility. John McCain has consistently fought for lower taxes to help small businesses, struggling families and individuals. McCain has also traveled extensively to Latin America and is well informed on international Hispanic issues. Just 3 months ago, McCain was in Colombia and Mexico to discuss the issue of drug trafficking and the importance of the free trade agreements.

On the issue of immigration reform Sen. John McCain has risked far more than his opponent to enact solutions. As a matter of fact, the immigration reform bill carries his name.

In an article called “Quien es mas macho?” by Jake Tapper of ABC News Political Punch, Tapper says "It's a complicated issue to explain, which may be why McCain doesn't invoke it, but facts are facts. McCain worked much harder and risked far more to pass that immigration bill than Obama did." Similarly Lynn Sweet of The Chicago Sun Times said, ”John McCain deserves credit for trying to forge a bipartisan deal on immigration in 2005 and 2006 at great political risk, a situation unfamiliar to rival Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.)."

The United States Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce joins John McCain in calling for Latin American Trade Agreements which his opponent opposes. The McCain/ Palin ticket supports NAFTA. NAFTA has increased trade between the U.S. and Mexico, stimulating growth and investment for businesses.

Latino small business advocates and presidential candidate, John McCain, all agree that tax relief on businesses is the best way to grow the economy. According to the 2006 National Latino Survey: “By a wide margin Latino registered voters prefer lowering taxes to grow the economy...”

McCain’s opponent believes that taxing you is Patriotic! Sen. McCain would like to keep tax rates low. McCain says that entrepreneurs are at the heart of American innovation, growth and prosperity. Entrepreneurs create the ultimate job security -- a new, better opportunity if your current job goes away. Entrepreneurs should not be taxed into submission.”

Hispanics in this state have a clear choice. John McCain has a proven record that will advance issues important to Hispanic Americans. His opponent in a recent speech to the world in Germany referenced not one Latin American country. Hispanic-Americans have a great friend in John McCain and the Wisconsin McCain Hispanic coalition is committed to helping put this state in the win column for John McCain. We encourage all Hispanics to join us in this effort. For more information go to http://www.johnmccain.com/espanol/.

Solberg- Quiros is nationally published columnist, Hispanic activist and the state of Wisconsin Hispanic Coalition Chairwoman for the McCain-Palin campaign. She resides in New London,Wisconsin.
