Tails from the trails - the good stuff
Heading out mid-morning yesterday, I glanced at gathering clouds and immediately assessed the potential for “walking.” With whom was I walking, when were we scheduled, would we avoid the rain?
It took me a moment to get back into post-campaign mode. Really! (Yesterday’s fare turned out to be light to heavy intermittent showers; wouldn’t have been enough to stop us dedicated door knockers. We know lots of tricks of the trade for successfully doing doors in the rain!)
Dave and I (and Dick and Wayne and Gerry and Randy, and Jon and many others) must have walked hundreds of miles over the summer. We surely know the streets of Appleton and can get you most anywhere you need to go. But more than the streets of Appleton, we’ve been blessed with committed, passionate new friends, met and nurtured on the campaign trail.
Here’s one excited and dedicated 8th grader (via an e-mail from his great mom):
I know this upcoming weekend is a big one for campaigning – but Greg and I will be out of town. Since Greg felt bad about that (he has no choice- it's a family thing) he decided to go out on a sign rampage this evening. We had some signs and we stopped at the office on College and loaded up more. We just got back from 3 1/2 hours [wow!] of driving around Appleton (mostly S of College and deep into enemy territory) and if someone had any of the 3 candidates signs, he got out and asked them if they wanted the others. Most did, some didn't. We passed out 18 McCain, 12 Gard and 6 Egelhoff, and Greg even took one on the chin as at one house the neighbors told him he sucked and so did McCain. [What? To an eighth-grader?] And combine a messy lit drop day with Dick, a burgeoning (but definitely aging) volunteer and poet. We worked hard. But we had lots of fun too.
Go, go, go. Run, run, run. See Jo go and run. See Dick walk. Walk, walk, walk. Walk in the rain. Slop, splash, splash. See Dick walk and drop. See Mary wash. Wash Dick’s clothes. See Mary dry. Dry Dick’s clothes. See Mary wash and dry. See Jo win. Win, win, win. See her crush her opponent. Crush, crush, smash. See Dave cheer. Cheer, cheer, cheer. See Dave cheer and clap.
Go get ‘em, Jo! And Thomas the Responsible:
Wow, did you give me the exercise today!!! By the way, my rate goes even higher when I have to spend 3.5 hours walking in the rain! hahahahahahaha I was careful to never walk on anyone's grass, just to try to represent you as well as I could.
….I turned in the few extras to the office, and then met with Amy and learned her tips and tricks for lists. Now I'm home and in dry clothes…. Gosh. Such great, great folks. And great, great folks of all stripes behind countless doors in Appleton. Countless special stories. Here’s just one…
It was probably 4:00’ish. The aroma from the kitchen was tacos – which led to a fun discussion about healthy salads (that night’s was greens, taco meat, nectarines! and heaven knows what else). Which led to C.’s husband calling later that evening and learning more about our campaign. Which led to the four of us enjoying a fish fry together a few weeks later. Which led to C and B helping us in countless ways throughout the remaining days. Special homemade meals occasionally. Even repairing the seam of a skirt for me! Special, forever friends.
Campaigning is great. Politics is better. The responsibility of being an American. It’s great.
COMMENTS
I was truly hoping to be able to address you as Representative-Elect Egelhoff. Unfortunately because of the events that transpired on election day it is not possible.
It was with profound sadness and sharp disappointment that I learned of your defeat. Ultimately it was "our" defeat. Thankfully the ideologies you stand for will live long, and the "crusade" for good Government will be won.
All I can say is Thanks Jo. Thanks for believing in the Democratic process. Thanks for making such a Herculean effort in your campaign. It is my sincere hope that you will continue to nourish, nurture, and trumpet good thoughts and principles in Government. I, with many others hold you in high esteem.

David (Fri Nov 07 07:54:12 2008)
I agree with Dave. I wish I could be addressing her as Rep.-Elect too, but, it was not to be. The mood of the electorate was for CHANGE. My adage to them is "be careful what you ask for. I hope and pray that they can live with what they've gotten.

It was a good hard fought campaign and a motley group it is that gets together behind one person. There are people you'll say good-bye to and never see again and others with whom you'll make lifetime friends. What better way to forge lasting bonds?
Jo, in this case the best woman did not win!
