This is cool. Follow the bridge...
My husband and I occasionally take a quick double-up motorcycle trip from Appleton to DePere or Green Bay for dinner or an ice cream or a lazy Saturday afternoon way to be together. The beautiful Fox River is the allure – and the big decision of the day is whether to travel via the east bank or the west – the scenery is different, but stunning either way.
Well, the stately Wrightstown bridge is our fulcrum for that decision – to continue our course along the eastern shore on Highway ZZ or to cross over the bridge to Highway D to continue down the river on its western shore.
Of course, for many others, the bridge is a necessity of everyday living. (As detailed on the web page mentioned below, the nearest Fox River crossings are in De Pere, 10 miles north, and Kaukauna 6 ½ miles south.) For those folks – and interested onlookers like us, the DOT has created a web page that contains up-to-the-minute details of the study to determine where to construct a new bridge, tentatively scheduled for construction in 2012 or 2013.
Interesting. If that ol’ grand dame bridge is something you care about, check the page once in a while. You’ll note a Project Advisory Committee meeting coming up December 8. Per Mindy Gardner of the DOT, it’s scheduled from 2 – 4 p.m. at Wrightstown Elementary School. Mindy notes that “the main purpose of the meeting is to be a ‘working meeting’ with a small, focused committee (13 members)…. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend and listen to the discussion that takes place. However, this is a working meeting and the committee members’ time is valuable. The public would be asked to limit their questions/comments for WisDOT to before or after the meeting…”
The time for all the questions and input you like will be at the third Public Information Meeting, to be scheduled sometime in January or February. Check out links on the web page to extensive information reported and handouts shared at previous meetings.
