    Vouchers vs. MPS funding

A serious article on serious stuff – voucher funding vs. MPS funding. Alan Borsuk does a good job breaking down City of Milwaukee property tax contributions for both systems and comparing the two.
The voucher funding flaw is a bigger problem than ever and is costing Milwaukee property taxpayers millions of dollars a year.

The voucher funding flaw effectively no longer exists, and the publicly funded program that allows children to go to private schools is saving Milwaukeeans property tax dollars.

Can both of those things be true? Decide for yourself.
It’s a good article – consider reading the whole thing.

Though it’s long, it talks only about the property tax contribution difference, not the total cost of each system, i.e., the difference in costs, and hence in state funds contributed to the two systems.
If you divide the number of voucher students into the amount of property taxes supporting them, you find city residents are providing $2,358 per voucher student. The rest of the public funding comes from the state, with the total of city and state spending coming to as much as $6,607 per student.

If you divide the number of students in the MPS system into the total in property taxes being spent on them, you get a figure of $2,481. Most of the rest of the $12,000-plus spent per student comes from state aid.
Voucher opponents (primarily WEAC and its members) claim the huge difference (over $5,400) in the cost of educating a child comes because MPS is ‘forced to take everyone’ – i.e., the costs of mandated special education. Has anyone seen an extensive analysis of the huge additional costs in the MPS system as compared to voucher students? $5,400 more for each and every MPS student is more than just paying for mandatory special education costs.
