Over 1.4 million Christmas cards sent to U.S. troops. Wow.

Thanks to you and 1,440,000 more like you, “Holiday Mail for Heroes” was a roaring success. I wrote about it before Thanksgiving in a piece meant to debunk the e-mail circulating that (wrongly) encouraged a Christmas card be sent directly to the troops. Thanks to Snopes, I talked about the right way to send cards to our troops, not realizing our effort turned out to be one of 4,200 mentions by Bloggers across the U.S.

In 2007, over 600,000 Christmas cards were sent to military and VA hospitals; in 2008, that number was 1,440,000! – a tremendous success! Here’s the thank you FoxPolitics received yesterday from Pitney Bowes:
On behalf of my colleagues at Pitney Bowes and the American Red Cross, thank you for all of your support in helping to spread the word about the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program. We would like you to know that we’ve not only reached the goal of delivering one million cards to US service members, veterans and military families, but we surpassed it! And it’s all because people like you and your blog readers who got involved. View the following video for more details and a personal message of thanks from all of us. We could not have done it without you.
Here’s the thank you from the American Red Cross. In addition to those 1.4 million Christmas cards, be sure to check out the eCard sent to US service members by the Red Cross on December 31. 3,778 contributors. Pretty cool.

I am so happy that our soldiers received so many Christmas cards. I, like many I am sure, sent cards to Walter Reed in DC for "Recovering Soldiers". For the second year in a row, I those cards were returned as "undeliverable" even though the address is what is posted on their website. Further, attempts to contact the Chaplain's office at WR were returned. What's UP!
