Election 2009: Grand Chute Chairman. Vote Feb. 17

The [Garage] Group is at it again. A loosely-knit band of brothers (and a sister now and again) is hosting interviews with the three candidates for Town of Grand Chute Chairman, this Thursday, February 5th, 7:00 PM, at the Old Bavarian restaurant, 3025 W. College Avenue.

(Interviews of the candidates for Appleton Common Council from the 1st District will be hosted by The Group Wednesday, February 11th at the same time, same place.)

These guys are interested in government – and want to find a way to get you interested too. Show up at 7:00, listen, learn and grill the candidates of your choice.

With a population of 20,500, Grand Chute stands as the state’s largest town – largest in both population and property value. A significant cluster of hotels, motels and entertainment venues, the Fox River Mall, industrial development and expanding commercial and residential development make Grand Chute very much an urbanized town – and very much a challenge to govern.

Three candidates are running in the February 17th primary.
    • Leroy Adamski, resident, mounted an unsuccessful challenge of Chairman Marsden in 2007
    • James Duncan, current Outagamie County Board Supervisor representing a district in Grand Chute
    • Michael Marsden, 14-year incumbent Town Chairman
The format is simple. Each candidate is allowed up to 45 minutes and asked not to be present when the other candidates are interviewed. Candidates are encouraged to fill the hall with their supporters – and their potential supporters.

Candidates are asked to begin their 45 minute drilling with a brief history of their experience and background, as relevant to the position they are seeking. They are asked the four questions below and then will be asked to respond to questions from the general public. The Group then states that the “remainder of the allotted time can be used to ‘stump’ as to why their organization should choose you as the candidate to support.” You won’t ever hear that in a League of Women Voters-sponsored affair!

I’ve been through it and loved it. The [Garage!] Group guys supported me (pursuant to my grilling in an event just like this one) in my recent candidacy for the 57th District Assembly seat – and they were great. They and their kids and their friends walked miles and miles doing lit drops, scouting out sign locations and continuously talking with friends, neighbors and customers. (The best. You guys are the best!)

Ok – those questions. Here they are. Same as they were for my interview, and the same as they’ll be when the Garage Group hosts the candidates in the Appleton Common Council 1st District primary – again, same time, same place (7:00 PM, Old Bavarian), Wednesday February 11.
    1. Why are you seeking this position and what beneficial skill set(s) can you bring to the office?
    2. If elected, what specific issues do you intend to focus on and what goals have you set?
    3. The Group is a fiscally conservative, constitutionally-based organization. We advocate lower taxes, no unnecessary fees and a moral and financially sound government held accountable to its constituents. How do your views mesh with or differ from this position?
    4. How are you different from the other candidates applying for this position?
Questions from the audience follow, and candidates may offer a closing statement – The Group puts themselves on the line here…
By attending tonight’s event, we presume you would appreciate our votes. We are offering more than just our vote. We are also selecting a candidate to support and campaign for as an organization. Why should we choose you?
I love it. Purely U.S. of A., kind of rip roarin’ raw Americana. And something not seen often enough. I repeat... these guys are great.

(Adamski will not be attending in person, as he had a long-planned trip scheduled for this time. He is, however, available to be present by phone during his prescribed time Thursday evening; it is hoped the logistics can be arranged to make his interview possible.)

    COMMENTS

I am one the 4 people who will be speaking to this group on February 11th as part of the 1st District Aldermanic election primary. I agree with you, this is how it should be done. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
