Grothman lays it on the line with business community

MADISON: Driving businesses and jobs out of the state is hardly the way to jumpstart the economy. Today Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) blasted Senate Democrats for passing two bills which will drive businesses into bankruptcy and prevent new businesses from taking hold.

Senate Bill 1 substantially increases the minimum wage and allows individual communities to raise wage rates even higher. Of course, if this bill becomes law it will drive marginal businesses out of business entirely and cause other businesses to lay off employees.

"There is no question that the number of vacant restaurants and spaces in strip malls will increase because of passage of these bills,” said Grothman. “Furthermore, the number of high school kids who will never get that valuable first job will increase. Oddly, the very people who complained about a lack of entry level jobs are the people who eliminated these jobs today."

Even worse, with Senate Bill 2, a wage lien law, the Senate Democrats and their allies will force the banking community to give fewer loans to new businesses, create fewer loans for business expansion and refuse to increase lines of credit to businesses in trouble.

"It's like the Democrats have not picked up a newspaper, turned on a television, tuned into a radio program or looked at their computer in the last six months -- we are in a credit crisis and Wisconsin is becoming a much more unfriendly state to give credit," observed Grothman.

"It's time for the business community to step it up. We need a much stronger grassroots presence in Madison. The days when you could count on a Governor or an Assembly Speaker to kill these flaky ideas have passed,” said Grothman. “Every business organization must generate a strong grassroots presence in Madison to let their legislators know how foolish and harmful these proposals are. It cannot be business as usual with the trade associations and business groups. If we hope to stop the spiraling number of businesses closing or leaving the state, it’s time for a lot more work to be done and much more attention to be paid to constituent contacts than in the past."

Glenn Grothman is a Republican and represents the residents of the 20th Senate district.
