Hundertmark: Were our founding fathers rolling in their graves?

As I listened to the first speech given to congress by our president last evening, I couldn’t help but wonder what, exactly, do the people of our great country believe is the proper role of government? I also wondered if our founding fathers were rolling over in their graves. Recalling the old, simplistic adage “the role of government is to protect our shores and deliver our mail”, I squirmed while listening to a much different version from our new president.

Wrapped in promises of a return to glory, the President’s words were woven together to obscure the content, which, if you listened carefully, described a huge growth in government. It is an idea so very different from my own.

The vision embraced by President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Governor Doyle for that matter, calls for a government that takes care of your every need - your education, your job, your house, your healthcare, your children. In short, it should manage every part of your life.

The second part to that ideology (and one that is tacit, and rarely expressed) is that you, as a citizen, now have the responsibility to pay for the very services that are being imposed upon you. You do not choose these services. You simply provide the necessary monies to operate a huge bureaucracy that gobbles up the funds and leaves you with little or nothing. And, make no mistake - the government will hold you accountable.

It leaves me shaking in my boots. How did we get here? The beliefs of those who created this country, were all about protecting the rights of the individual, encouraging liberty, ending the heavy hand of an oppressive government and allowing and encouraging the free market system to flourish. In the end, encouraging commerce so that it can succeed without unnecessary impediments should be the rule of thumb.

Government, representing the people of America, has the obligation to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. But for those of us who are able-bodied, who want to live in freedom and not under the restraints of a repressive government, our laws must reflect the ideals that the best government is one that governs the least.

It is our duty, then, to speak loudly and clearly (while we still have that freedom) that America took the wrong path when we reached the fork in the road last fall. And, it is absolutely necessary to change course as soon as possible. Before it is too late.

Jean Hundertmark is a resident of Clintonville and is the former representative from the 40th Assembly District.

Were our founding fathers rolling in their graves?

Yes. An African-American president and female Secretary of State alone would do the trick.
