Obey, House leaders call for earmarks reform

What? I nearly fell off my chair when I read that headline yesterday. Did anyone else? (I included the link in yesterday’s FoxPolitics News.) Mr. Earmark himself?
Rep. Dave Obey joined House leaders and President Barack Obama Wednesday in announcing new steps to reform how lawmakers secure funding for pet projects in their districts.

…. "These reforms, when combined with previous reforms since Democrats took control of the House in 2007, protect the integrity of the process and assure the proper use of taxpayers' money," Obey said.
Larry Bivins with the Press-Gazette Washington Bureau wrote the article; wonder if his jaw was hanging open as well. Actually, to be fair, I think what Obey was probably talking about is a reform process that supposedly allows all earmarks to be exposed in some manner or another (i.e., somewhere in a committee hearing), probably for a minimum tenth of a second or something.

Rep. Obey is by far the champion House member earmarking in the Wisconsin delegation – and doesn’t do too badly himself amongst all lawmakers – seeing that he’s chairman of the Appropriations Committee and all of that. Can’t let that go to waste!

Consider the numbers – the first is the earmarks secured individually by a Congressman, the second is the total of those earmarks plus those co-sponsored with other members of congress.

    Rep. Petri: $1M, $6M
    Rep. Baldwin: $1.7M, $7.5M
    Rep. Moore: $1.9M, $7.4M
    Rep. Kagen: $2.4M, $19.1M
    Rep. Obey: $33.8M, $68.8M

(FYI, Senator Kohl doesn't do to badly himself: $23.8M,$89.3M)

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about earmarks in the omnibus spending bill. Taxpayers for Common Sense does a terrific job.

HHMMMM, and I thought Obama was going to bring change, and refuse to sign anything with earmarks. It seems the only change we're seeing is the speed in which his lies (vs. those of predecessors) are being found out.
