How simple. Just tell me what you pols do all day.

Here’s a guy – a politician no less - who knows how to be transparent and accountable. My kind of guy. Yesterday’s Washington Post contained a great article on Senator Jon Tester, a freshman Democrat from Montana who wears cowboy boots and sports a buzz haircut.

As the Post shares, “…Tester is a trailblazer bent on opening up the inner workings of his office. His radical practice comes after irate voters in November tossed out longtime incumbents implicated in lobbying scandals and as public interest groups clamor for more transparency in the way Congress does business.”

So Senator Tester posts his schedule on his door – and now on his web site – for all to see. His web site, which holds posts for only a week at a time, includes the names, affiliations and duration of each meeting or activity. The Sunlight Foundation, in the interest of, well, sunlight, is keeping a full archive of the Senator’s postings.

I think this is great. Some say it’s grandstanding. Not me. Ok, I suppose it’s open to manipulation, but for now, it’s new and it’s really refreshing.

Think of it. Tester tells everyone which lobbyist he’s meeting with, which professional association, which constituent back home, which Indian tribe, which fellow Senator. He doesn’t include personal activities – but doesn’t seem to have time for many. If he’s doing all the stuff he says he is, this is one busy man and he is earning his keep in my book.

(Hopefully some enterprising soul - a future opponent? - is correlating those meetings with future campaign contributions. Again, more sunlight.)

I say the guy is sticking his neck out in the name of me knowing just what the heck he’s doin’. I really like that.

Full time elected officials around here… would you consider posting your detailed schedules so we know what you’re doing all day?
