Rose Fernandez is one classy lady
“Well, no one said this would be easy. We were the under-funded underdog from day one. We built an insurgent campaign and exceeded almost everyone’s expectations. I do not regret running. And I am proud of how I ran. We stayed positive. Ran on the issues.”
I’m proud of her too. One very classy lady. Here’s how her campaign manager put it in a communiqué to supporters late last week:
I am so proud of Rose and the race she has run. She has been the ideal candidate. Does her homework. Never complains. Isn't afraid to question but always runs the play that's called. Tireless. Always on message. Ethics beyond reproach. Many thanks to James Wigderson for posting the whole concession speech. Read it. It’s very good stuff. And hits a few nails on the head.
We could not compete with our opponent, but most importantly, we could not fully counter the nearly three quarters of a million dollars WEAC spent on his behalf.
…. A few minutes ago I called Tony Evers and wished him congratulations and the best of luck as he heads DPI.
While I wasn’t pleased with some of the developments in the campaign, as I said on the campaign trail…We all have a vested interest in the success of our public schools.
It remains my hope, that because of the heat we put on in this race, DPI will still change.
I sincerely hope Superintendent-Elect Evers will not feel beholden to the special interests that got him elected…and we should all give him a chance to prove his independence. And then there’s the spin of amateur liberal pundit Chris Liebenthal. Simply unbelievable in the face of WEAC money thrown at the race. Absolutely unbelievable.
I think [Fernandez] would have had a better chance of winning except for two things. The fact that she was too willing to sidle up to the special interests was one of them. The other was that some of her ideas and positions showed just how unqualified she really was for the job.
Perfect lack of class. And lack of truth.
(In a quick post, Wigderson had a comment on experience I could appreciate - and, perhaps, a comment on ‘hope’ and ‘change?’ “Abrahamson and Evers won, and we'll get to hear again just how important experience is. Except when electing the President of the United States, right?”)

COMMENTS
I find the reaction to this election fascinating. My personal preference was Rose. It seems if "our" candidate loses the reason is nefarious, e.g. too much money from a special interest group. Does that mean whenever our candidate of choice wins an election the reason was also nefarious? Perhaps the simple truth is that more people preferred Tony Evers. But that would be too easy an answer. Obviously no intelligent, informed, moral, conscientious person would disagree with me!

Very well said Jo.

David (Wed Apr 08 14:17:00 2009)
Give me a break Dennis. $750,000 worth of negative advertising Fernandez was unable to respond to. You do the survey. Perhaps you can learn exactly what specifically voters envisioned Mr. Evers is going to do at DPI. I'm sure voters are very familiar with his agenda for Wisconsin's schools and agree with his proposals on how to get there. Yeah right Dennis. People preferred Tony Evers because they saw his name more on television. Be assured, not 1% of the 15% of voters who voted were hanging on the every word of Fernandez and Evers during any one of their broadcast debates.

Also consider that teachers have a great vested interest in the results of this race, and every school board race in the land. Unfortunately, those with the greatest stake will always tend to come out in greater percentages than those who only stand to lose a relatively few dollars. And equally unfortunate is that the interests of the WEA is NOT in the best interests of either students or taxpayers.
One thing I want to take issue with Rose on. While I too have a vested interest in the education of my children, it is the success of the public indoctrination centers that is at fault for the socialistic inclinations of the electorate, and the resulting eminent ruination of our country. Government is NOT the answer. We should work for the orderly elimination of ALL public "schools."
"Public schools have certain social and humanistic goals which transcend its academic function." Spoken by a female student in 1983, on Wis. public radio. She was on with the UW professor who doubtless put that piece of dangerous drivel in her head.

Ken Van Doren (Wed Apr 08 19:32:10 2009)
So, Jo, what are you saying? That voters are ignorant, gullible, fools, too stupid to see through high price marketing ads and spin? Apparently you did. But of course you are informed, intelligent and all those who differ from you are imbeciles. A real problem in democracy is that everyone is empowered to vote regardless of competence or preparation. (Perhaps the same can be said of those running for office.) What's your solution? Election spending regulations? I.Q qualifications? Mandatory testing of voters on candidate positions? A legal challenge based on the premise the election was "stolen" through false advertising?
My guess is that most people don't give a rip. How many didn't even care enough to even vote? Those that did vote probably had a vested interest in the outcome. Unfortunately, more of these wanted Tony than Rose. It's how the system works. Work the system or change it. If you're going to imply that something illegal or immoral is happening, make a compelling case that will change minds and behaviors.

Dennis (Thu Apr 09 10:02:52 2009)
Let's agree to disagree Dennis.
