Emily Matthews: We the People - and the Recall Doyle effort
A passionate supporter of the Recall Doyle effort, Emily Matthews is a free marketer, a very hard worker, a FoxPolitics.net reader and a frequent commenter. I asked her if she would please share her thoughts about one or more of the RecallDoyle meetings in the Manitowoc/Sheboygan/Calumet County area this week. Thanks to Randy Melchert for the accompanying photo (Home Page only). JE.
The Chilton meeting was well-attended; Manitowoc was jammed. Attendees at both meetings were in deadly earnest: We all have a common enemy. But I get ahead of myself. First, take a look at the past…
They were A MINORITY: Their opponents had gathered 700 signatures, but they had a measly 56.
They were IN JEOPARDY: The paper they signed could easily have meant their death.
They were HOPEFUL: They believed in the power of the people to effect change, and in divine providence.
They were a true grassroots movement; they attacked political and economic trouble head-on. They realized they were making history.
Wisconsin is in trouble; there are political and economic problems galore. We have the fourth highest deficit in the union; 6.67 BILLION and counting. Our governor, along with other politicians, has raided the Transportation fund, the Forestry fund, the Patients’ Compensation fund, the cell phone overtax payments, and any and all money he can get his hands on.
Doyle has vetoed voter ID, in the face of DOCUMENTED VOTER FRAUD, raised taxes, used line-item veto to rewrite budgets, raised taxes, vetoed banning puppy mills, raised taxes…Yet he claimed in 2003, “Going forward, I am open to every solution except one -we should not, we must not, I will not raise taxes. Wisconsin's problem is not that we tax too little; it is that we spend too much."
What happened? Because of Doyle and his tax hikes, Wisconsin businesses are closing or moving to other states. Unemployment is “officially” 9%.
Citizens for Responsible Government and Wisconsinites’ Interests Now are tired of the lies, the broken promises, the crippling taxes – and we are tackling the problem! We will not wait for things to get worse, vainly hoping for a magical improvement.
Like those 56 people of the past, we are sending the message loud and clear to Governor Doyle and all others who ignore taxpayers: “If you don’t listen to us, we will kick you out!”
Yes, we are fully capable of recalling Jim Doyle. For example, Doyle was in Milwaukee Monday to sign his smoking ban. He was met by an angry crowd, and slunk in the back of the restaurant where he signed the bill, then slunk back out the same way. And all the passersby cheered the protesters! We definitely have public sympathy on our side. Doyle’s popularity is down at 35%; just a few days ago it was 36%. Wisconsin news media didn’t cover this, but Minnesota and Chicago papers did.
So, back to the meetings. Energy level was high, and spontaneous applause peppered the speeches. The general feeling is that we cannot fail; we know we have him running scared. People couldn’t wait to sign up as volunteers, and the recall movement has gone from about 15 people to well over 3000 in a matter of weeks: This is a true people’s movement. Once Doyle is gone, other arrogant politicians will have to take note.
For the first time in a long time, people feel they indeed have a choice, and are refusing to accept what is demanded of them by spendaholics in Madison. There is hope instead of futile anger and helplessness.
We can do this! Won’t you join us? Haven’t you been taxed enough?
Today, barely anyone even knows about those 700 signers and their declaration. But Americans still have the other declaration signed by 56 men, the Declaration of Independence. They made history. It’s time we do the same.
Emily Matthews is a mom and a nurse from Kiel, Wisconsin.
Randy Melchert comments briefly here about the Manitowoc meeting; he estimated about 50 were in attendance. Here’s the Recall Doyle “Exploratory Portal.”
COMMENTS
Don't forget that he also immediately spent the tobacco monies we recieved as a result of a lawsuit the state of Wisconsin won. It was supposed to go to rehabbing and education. None did. Also he is quietly slipping in a fishing license increase for this year. Yet another tax he said he would not raise.

And, I just found out, Chrysler in Racine is leaving to go to Mexico, and he's allowing them to keep OUR "stimulus" money and take it to Mexico!

emily matthews (Thu May 21 10:07:21 2009)
Way to go Emily. Keep up the good work and the organization to recall Doyle. I think the grassroots campaign can work despite the fact that the main stream media does not want to cover it. Eventually you will drown that out with your effort.

The picture on the Manitowoc meeting tells the story. Everyone in the picture is white and retirement-age. Where are all the working people?
50 people? That seems generous, there were about 20 in the photo.
I suppose if the Communist Party met in a phone booth they could say their meeting was jammed, too.
I own and operate my own small businesses, so I fight the good fight everyday. While I understand the frustration, it's hard to get behind or even believe a group that is sooo disingenuous on the surface.

Jeff (Thu May 21 15:39:47 2009)
So what's disingenuous? (I think you're mistaken to think the picture was meant to capture everyone, if that's your big hangup...

Jo (Thu May 21 16:05:23 2009)
I take complete offense at your claim, Jeff! YOU were not at the meeting; I was! I am, in fact, in the photo, and since my youngest is only 13, I will not be retiring any time soon. There were a lot of guys there in their 30s, right up at the front, not in the pic. I presume they all are working, as they wouldn't be paying taxes if they didn't (and therefore wouldn't be as concerned as taxpayers are, as to the state of WI economics.) No, these people are in the trenches, and worried their jobs will be the next to go.
Camera: It was just an ordinary camera, not wide-angle, and there were actually MORE than 50 folks there, as the room capacity was 50, and there were people standing all around the edges of the room.
As to "everyone being white" sorry, buddy, MOST people in Manitowoc County ARE white. I can't help the underlying demographics! If you think more blacks and Asians should move here, get going and recruit them, we won't turn them away!
Jo, send this in an email to this guy, in case he doesn't read the blog, thanks!
One final comment: the Plymouth meeting was held in a restaurant, and our waitress, all of 20 years old, couldn't wait to get her hands on the literature, so she could hand it out to her friends.

emily matthews (Fri May 22 08:49:29 2009)
Okay, I'll give you 50 people. The demographics speak for themselves, waitresses aside. More than 300 times that number voted for Doyle last time.
Manitowoc County has a population of more than 80,000. 50 people is less than than 1/100th of a percent.
This is a political movement?
Instead of spitting into the wind, why not encourage our Republican "leaders" to show some leadership and present some plans that are better than the alternative?

jeff (Fri May 22 10:30:52 2009)
