    Beware of a "Stronger Oshkosh"

Citizens for a Stronger Oshkosh. Sounds like motherhood and apple pie. What’s not so idyllic is the group’s first invitee – the Institute for Wisconsin’s Future (IWF). According to an account of the group’s “inaugural” meeting” in the Oshkosh Northwestern, Citizens for a Stronger Oshkosh.
intend[s] to look at ways the state’s budget will affect Oshkosh residents, local government and schools.
The Northwestern news article then reports the findings of the IWF. All the IWF big guns were there – Jack Norman, research director, Joe Fahey, listed as a consultant, and Paulette Feld, with the Winnebago County Wisconsin Labor Council. (IWF’s web site lists Mr. Fahey as “Organizer.” Hmm.) The Northwestern refers to the IWF as a “non-partisan public policy research and community outreach organization.” Yeah, right. Funny thing. It’s the exact same way IWF describes itself.

“Dr. Jack Norman” speaks at county Democratic Party meetings and union gatherings. His presentations discuss “how individual taxpayers are being shafted at the expense of corporations.”

IWF’s board is heavy with union representation. Karen Royster, IWF’s Executive Director, is described by the BizJournal online library as having been an
Executive Director of a county-wide anti-hunger organization, a low-income neighborhood development group and the Institute for Wisconsin's Future. She has played a key role in establishing a congregation-based community organizing system in Milwaukee, a youth center for Latino and African-American young people involved in gang activity, coordinating state and national efforts to promote increased funding for public education and efforts to fight for fair and adequate state tax systems that ensure effective public sector services. Karen has conducted national training workshops on school funding for groups including ACORN, the National Council of Education Activists, and the National School Funding Network.
Now you tell me. Can you say with a straight face that IWF is a “Non-partisan public policy research and community outreach organization?” Indeed, IWF’s self-description. Perhaps the Oshkosh Northwestern need do a little more checking before blithely using the “non-partisan” descriptor in the future.

AFter hearing the IWF presentation, (according to the Northwestern) a “majority of those who attended… would increase [Wisconsin’s] beer and sales taxes to deal with a massive debt.” I guess that makes Oshkosh Stronger. And Wisconsin Stronger!! And the whole world Stronger, I suppose.

Beware Oshkosh. Higher taxes mean higher spending. Always. Be assured, with greater government spending, you will not be Stronger.

(I attended the same IWF presentation in March. Here’s my “non-partisan” report. The message: This is the time to ask for more and more and more taxes.)

I do hope everyone who read Jo's commentary caught the ACORN reference. If you'd dig deep enough I'm betting you'd find a financial connection to an old funeral home address in New Orleans.

Kinda like the "non-partisan" dog and pony show promoting socialized medicine in WI a couple years ago. They did not like, or answer all my questions. I enjoyed making them uncomfortable.
