Still MORE budget mistruths from Rep. Nelson
As often as Rep. Tom Nelson repeats this trash about the reckless 2009 – 11 budget, somebody must refute it. The most recent Nelson fabrication was featured in last Sunday’s Post-Crescent. I’ve spoken about the lies in the past, referencing letters Nelson sent to his constituents. I addressed Democrat budget spin here (5/22) and here (6/1) as well.
Just a few of the Nelson-isms that showed up in last Sunday’s P-C:
We committed to passing a balanced budget that protected Wisconsin families and workers from harmful tax increases and maintained our shared priorities. We placed a premium on public input, listening to the opinions of more than 3,000 Wisconsinites at public hearings. We pledged to pass the budget on time for the first time since 1977.
On all counts, we have fulfilled our goals. I ask you:
1. Were you one of the 3,000 Wisconsinites that took off all day to sit and wait so you could speak in a budget hearing? If you did, did anyone listen?
2. The budget absolutely isn’t balanced. To wit, the Legislative Fiscal Bureau notes (page One, Item 3) that the legislature specifically be exempt from current law that requires that revenues exceed expenses. You call that a balanced budget? (Thank you, Rep. Petersen, for your helpful explanation.)
3. Ok, ok, the budget was passed before July 1. How? Most of all, in secret and behind closed doors. Hundreds of critical issues resolved in secret by Democrats - without a scintilla of Republican input. And what got passed? “[A] balanced budget [NO)] that protected Wisconsin families and workers from harmful tax increases [NO!]”? NO.
Ok. More from Nelson:
At a time when other states are considering across-the-board cuts for K-12 education, we shielded our schools and our kids from the harshest cuts.
This is tragic. Schools across Wisconsin this year just received specifics about their school aids. Here are a few of the headlines from this week:
Read the articles if you like. You can get the picture just with the headlines! This bad news certainly has nothing to do with “shield[ing] our schools and our kids from the harshest cuts.” What garbage.
And then there’s all the stuff Nelson’s been using for months and months. Like the Democrats cut spending and didn’t raise taxes. Call it misleading or call it lies. It’s not factual and it’s just not right.
The reason Democrats claim that spending goes down is because spending in the general fund is down because spending was transferred to other funds. And, spending in other funds is way up. Total spending is up by $3.6 billion and borrowing increases by $3.6 billion as well. Does that sound like a decrease in spending to you?
And then there’s the tax business. Nelson and his fellow Dems keep saying this over and over:
Assembly Democrats approved a plan that protects 99 percent of Wisconsinites from an income tax increase, holds the line on property taxes, and contains no across-the-board sales tax or payroll tax hike. This is spin to the max. Ok. No sales tax increase. And no payroll tax hike? Wisconsinites don’t pay state payroll (FICA) taxes! Here’s the final tally: Tax and fee increases in this budget are up by a whopping $2.1 billion. Spin it however you want, but there’s no hiding it - that is a tax increase. And that doesn't include the $1.2 billion increase in February when the legislature passed the "budget repair bill" for 2009 or the minimum $1.5 billion property tax increases projected as a result of budget cuts in state aids!
Keep your ears peeled and your facts current. Lies about this irresponsible budget are sure to continue.

This post brings me both respecxt and disappointment for Spencer Black. Rep. Black tried the leadership thing for a year and abandoned it because the caucus culture wanted him to do the Tom Nelson tippy-toe-with-the-truth dance. Spin and pliet. Do a walley, a double Salchow and triple lutz, closing with a Bielman. I respect him for being honest enough to know he couldn’t do that. But I am disappointed he lacked the discipline to hit the reset button and do it differently. Things won’t change until someone dares to change them. How abour it, Jo?

Now the trick is to get some HONEST competition for these races, not cameleons.

Things WON'T change unless both party leaderships wake up and realize they are responsible to US. That's why recalling Doyle will send a message loud and clear that we the PEOPLE, are sick and tired of politics-as-usual. Don't forget, it was the REPUBLICANS who failed to pass TABOR.
Re. the budget, one simple truth needs to be shouted from the housetops: WI has the highest per capita deficit of all 50 states! That's all we need to know, to know where we taxpayers rate in the minds of politicians.
