Ok Tea Party-ers – your turn to run the GOP
Conservative bloggers and activists met in Pittsburgh this weekend to “take back the internet,” spurred on by a host of famed conservatives speaking to the “nation’s foremost new media experts.” RightOnline.com, sponsored by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, hosted such luminaries as Michelle Malkin, Ed Morrissey, Grover Norquist, Steve Moore, John Fund, Jim Pinkerton and many more.
Mid-morning Saturday, Erick Erickson, Managing Editor of RedState.com, issued a challenge to those Tea Party-ers committed to staying completely absolutely uncommitted to the Republican Party.
We got to the tea parties. [Now] We have to stick together.
What do you do after the Tea Parties? Let me suggest something….
We need a coup. I’m not talking about government…. We need a coup of the political parties.
How many of you who went to a tea party then showed up and became a precinct captain at your local political parties? The inference is… not many. So Erickson talks about his local Republican party, where 2/3 of the precincts are without the critical precinct captain.
…. If 2/3 of [the precincts] are filled up by people who have gone to tea parties then all of a sudden, who runs the local Republican party? The Tea Party activists. And once Tea Party-ers take over their local party, then they’ll be posed to take back the state parties, and then the national party!
So, until (Republicans) start cleaning up their own act, it’s not going to do us any good. We’re going to be back where we were. So you must now get involved. Stop going to Tea Parties and start going to political parties and blow ‘em up! Get involved. Take ‘em back. Become the voice you want to become. Become the local political party. Become the national political party.
….And once you take them over, then we take back Washington - and we keep it. Is it a new way to look at the Republican Party? Tea Party-ers, will you get on board?
Listen to the whole thing on C-Span. Mr. Erickson’s 5-minute speech starts at about 26:00.

Wonderful idea! Having the Tea-Partiers leading would give a hugh lift to the left. Joe the Plumber, Sara Palin and a host of other equally eratic and self-serving folks leading the party would solidify the left's grip on politics for years to come.

Billie:
I think you missed the point of the article in that the people attending the "Tea Parties" are being asked to change the DNA of the Republican Party by getting involved in setting policy and voting. Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin are not the leaders of the Republican Party just like Moyer and Dean are not necessarily representative of the Democratic Party.
Tea Party organizers are trying to get like minded conservative people involved whether they are Republican or Democrat or Independent. You always seen to take it as a personal afront when anything of a conservative idea is spoken.
The next time there is a liberal left wing event, please let us all know. We would love to attend to see what you have to say.

Jo,
The idea of "infiltrating" a party at the local level isn't new...but it is about the only real option left if non-violent political change is to take place.
My feeling – no supported by much empirical evidence, I'm afraid – is that the people attending the Tea Parties (and I'm one of 'em) are quite tired of the parties we have. Re-building them from the local level up to the national level is a bit like renovating a condemned house to make it livable again. Too many problems with the foundation and the wiring and the roof...better to build a brand new house.
Of course, that presents a whole different set of problems. Mainstream acceptance is one, cohesiveness between branches of the party is another. Look what happened to the Reform Party.
I think about the difficulties associated with effective political action and I begin to wonder whether human beings really can operate as independent entities; whether we really need leaders to show us the way; whether we really are lowly plebeians whose hands need to be held every step of the way.

Billie-
Have you ever heard Joe ( the plumber) W. speak? He is better than the Annointed One, and he does not need a teleprompter. So be afraid, be very afraid.....

Ken Van Doren (Mon Aug 17 09:00:54 2009)
Ron Paul and the Campaign for Liberty have been making similar arguments for most of 2 years, at least. The sad fact is that the Republican Party, and too many of its incumbents are huge parts of the problem. Nevertheless, at the urging of fellow lovers of liberty, I am joining the effort to reform the Republican Party. We have until 2010 to elect not just new, but principled replacements for incumbents. If we fail, the Republican party, and perhaps our country and our liberty are toast. It will not do the replace Democrat crooks with Republican ones. We have to do better.... And IMHO, one incumbent who is too much a part of the problem is Mr. Petri. Anyone up for taking him on? I would, but do not live in the district.
And Mike, if you want some fun, join me at "Fighting Bob" in Baraboo, Sept. 12. Kinda a cross between bull baiting, and Daniel in the Lions' Den.

Ken Van Doren (Mon Aug 17 09:07:44 2009)
Why does everyone assume there have to be only 2 parties? TEA Party is sick of both major parties, and will turn out to be more and more of a force to be reckoned with.
It's true, why try to fix a condemned building? The Republocrats only want TEA's energy and effort, to boost THEIR perceived "power".
We started with the concept of getting Doyle out of office, one way or another. The recall effort had its desired effect, if the news that he's not running for office again is correct.
Did you know, we are "officially" banned from his "polish-my-image" speeches now? At the recent meeting in Madison, 70 people were allowed in, but nobody from the recall team per Doyle's specific request (OK, it actually came from his staffer--but who told the staffer?)--as we ask too many uncomfortable questions.
We have not let up on the pressure on him, and are now going after his lackeys in the state government; the ones that made his horrendous budget possible. What's the Republocrat Party doing? ANYTHING!?
Timing turned out to be a factor in the recall effort to remove Doyle, but it won't be nearly as much of an issue for going after the smaller fry. And we are going after them!
We will have a booth at the Manitowoc County Fair next week. Come see us, get informed, then get involved.

Ken, love to take him on, but we'd need a realistic candidate to replace him with. Maybe Joe Leibham, but we need him so desperately in the state senate we can't afford to let him go.
