Racism? Ridiculous and not the issue.
Apparently Representative Petri’s sense of Midwestern politeness and Washington decorum ruled the day – and he was one of only seven Republican House members voting to censure fellow Republican Joe Wilson. Ok Tom. Whatever.
Double standards cited all over the place throughout the blogging and main stream media worlds. It’s apparently ok on the House floor to call Republicans liars over and over. So it’s all on the up and up when Murtha and Jefferson aren’t censured – but Wilson is? Are you kidding me?
And now Rep. Joe Wilson isn’t only censured. He’s a racist. Ok, Maureen Dowd is one thing. (Whatever.)
But Jimmy Carter? My gosh.
"I think it's based on racism," Carter said at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."
Carter called Wilson's comment "dastardly" and an aftershock of racist views that have permeated American politics for decades. Rep. Wilson’s son disagrees.
"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won't comment on former President Carter, because I don't know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it's just not in him."
"It's unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree - and inappropriately disagree - on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race." So… are black legislators racist?
But the White House and Pelosi yielded to senior black Democrats, led by House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), and other members of the leadership team, who argued that Wilson's remark was a breach of conduct that must not be tolerated.
Clyburn has said behind closed doors that many black voters saw Wilson's actions as part of the heated rhetoric from conservative activists whose protests, including one on the Capitol grounds Saturday, have included depictions of Obama as Adolf Hitler and the comic-book villain the Joker, according to those attending the meetings. It was one thing to have such remarks at town hall meetings during the summer recess but completely different during a presidential address to a joint session of Congress, Clyburn and other black Democrats argued, and Democrats needed to stand up for the nation's first black president. Yes. Credibility is important – and Hitler references and Joker posters are demeaning and yes, disrespectful and don’t help. But does it mean you can’t call out this president without the race card being played?
Eric Etheridge does a great job “gathering … opinion from around the web” about the day’s racist accusations and overtones. As advertised, opinions range the gamut. It’s an insightful and helpful read.
Obama, a powerful, convincing speechifier and campaigner, has no qualms about using his own extensive hyperbole, day in and day out. I don't have Joe Wilson's complete life story, but I do know the protesting out here in the hinterlands by real life Americans, objecting to Obama policies and statements, has nothing to do with racism.

COMMENTS
Glen Beck "Obama is a racist"
Rush Limbaugh "Obama is a racist" "Barrack the magic Negro."
A stamp with Obama portrayed as a watermelon eating boy.
Michelle Obama is related to a Gorilla.
"That BOY shouldn't be allowed to have his finger on the button"
Just to name a few.
Mr. Wilson suggested that it was unseemly for the out of wedlock child of Strom Thurmond to reveal the Senator's indescretions.
The world is spinning wildly out of control and we are not helping.

I don't quite follow your squawk here, Billie. I can't speak for Beck, but his reasoning (and that of other political commetators) appears to be that some of the actions of Obama seem to be race-centered; and Rush didn't refer to Obama as "The Magic Negro," an editorialist (who was black) for the LA Times originated that term.
Michelle, in my opinion, doesn't look like a gorilla, she looks more like a wookie with a purse. But that's just my preference in women, and it has more to do with her physical size and taste in clothes than to her race.
As for Petri, I smell a primary coming. This is NOT the time for a closet RINO to jump up and become a part of the liberal/moderate minority. Now is the time, when the world is spinning out of control, to have a Joe Wilson who knows the truth when he hears it and knows when to call a lie a lie.
And Obama WAS lying when he stood there and tried to tell everyone that the only legislation that has passed the House doesn't include coverage for illegals. Wilson was there to see the liberals defeat the amendment that would have excluded illegals, and he was mad as hell and wasn't going to take it anymore.
Go get 'em Joe - and you too Jo!

Ridiculous? I'll tell you what's ridiculous. Giving time and space to a senile, useless, has been like Jimmy Carter. Talk about superfluous! I can't believe I actually voted for this dweeb.
Standard tactic of the loons. March out the "trumps all cards" (arguments and discourse) tired lable, racism.
Disagree with ANYTHING the President says and you are a defacto racist. B.S.
But then again, what would you expect from that wing of what used to be a noble party?
Every time you think the Dems can't get any worse, say or do anything more shocking than the last.........
To quote one great former President, "Well, there you go again".

steve wells (Wed Sep 16 10:46:06 2009)
So to oppose OBAMA is racism, because he is black... HMM, well if THEY want to play the race card, first let me note he is at best half black.
Now let me report some other "fishy" racists to the Whitehouse:
Ann Wortham, Tom Sowell, Walter Williams, Dave King (candidate for WI Secy of state,) Rev. Manning, Larry Elder, and Alan Keyes. ALL are blacker, ANY would make a better president than BHO.
And Duke, any likely primary opponents of the middling Petri come to mind? He needs to go.

Ken Van Doren (Wed Sep 16 11:31:52 2009)
So far no individual has come out and said they'd consider running, but I always envisioned Sen. Joe Liebham as the next Representative from that district. Mind you, HE hasn't said anything about it, but if he ran Petri would be toast.
I don't know what Joe runs on, but it's high-octane something-or-other. He goes nuts from dawn to dusk and wears out more than a couple pair of shoes during a campaign. If he ran in the primary he would win.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Cong. Petri continues to drive along just barely to the right of the centerline. It IS possible to pass on the right in politics.

Duke (Wed Sep 16 14:19:58 2009)
Methinks someone is protesting too much regarding who's racist and who's not. It is a given that there is racism in this world, in this country. So why not in this Congress and maybe even in this White House and in both political parties. Anyone who says otherwise is a li--, uh, is mistaken. Can it not also be a given that there are two kinds of racism -- conscious and subconscious (and, I suppose, unconscious)? The next time someone calls you a racist, might you not look at yourself in a mirror and ask the question you'd rather not answer? Try it sometime.
I like to think there's never been a racist bone in my body. Then I rememeber some of my thoughts about Oneida and Menominee Indians when I was a lad. And I hang my head.
It's too easy to just say no.
Rather than call Tom Petri names, why not ask yourself this question: Oh?

d.m. (Wed Sep 16 14:51:39 2009)
Following a tumultuous summer that saw the "silent majority" vocalize their outrage over "Obamacare" as the President's approval ratings plummeted, I was waiting for someone on his side to throw the race card out on the table. Rather than acknowledge the fact that the bill is an unpopular disaster, Jimmy Carter and Maureen Dowd would rather call the majority of Americans "racist" for exercising their First Amendment right in voicing their opposition. How ironic considering that Carter once took an oath to uphold the United States Constitution, and, as a journalist, Maureen Dowd should be aware that if it were not for this Amendment, she might not have a job right now. I wonder, if it were Sarah Palin proposing this legislation, would her opponents have been labeled "sexist" by the likes of Dowd and her allies?

Steph (Wed Sep 16 18:01:35 2009)
Hear hear Steph. You are right on.

Jo (Wed Sep 16 19:14:23 2009)
Jimmy Carter has been around the world several times and whichever country he lands in, he manages to throw a few barbs at his country of origin. He's an equal opportunity anti-American. He seems to consider himself a citizen of the world so I suggest that he catch a trip on the Flying Dutchman.
d.m., not sure I follow your post, but no, I am not a racist even though I detest the political correctness that requires that we excuse bad or criminal behavior by black people simply because of their skin color, as witness Charlie Rangel,(taxes)Al Sharpton,(Tawana Brawley) Je$$e Jack$on (practically everything) and way too many more to list.
Our president said that a white policeman "acted stupidly" when he knew nothing about the situation involving a black friend of his. The media had fun with the "beer summit" without looking deeper into the fact that the president spoke out of turn. This staement by the president tells me that he is in fact, a racist. He has a built-in animosity against middle American white people. He's had a very good life, well educated, plenty of money, a good station in life, a good wife and two lovely girls yet he can't distance himself from that automatic bias.
I have attended Tea Parties to protest and any other rally to learn more about these monstrous millstones in the form of nationalized health care and cap and trade (tax) the Dems want to hang around our necks.
I was born and raised in a constitutional republic and I'd like to keep it that way. Obama can keep his socialist republic. I'll do all I can to keep mine.
