All I want is love
1,100 gathered last night in the expansive ballroom of Appleton’s Radisson Paper Valley to celebrate love. And life.
1,100. Did you hear of it? Publicity was only word of mouth, friend to friend, life-giver to life-giver; Fear of protest and disruption was a motivator for quiet in the community. So controversial that I was told our local paper declined to cover it. Imagine. Cover the feel-good celebrations – but when it comes to an issue of love, life and death, cover the dramatic crime scene headlines – send “Breaking News” updates to my inbox about Super Glue and sex stories - but stories about abortion? Oh my.
The numbers themselves are worthy of headlines. 8,229 abortions performed in Wisconsin in 2008 (page 10), down from a high point of 21,754 in 1980. Wow. And we call that a victory.
What happens when one precious Wisconsin young person is brought home in a body bag? What screams of pain should we be hearing when that number is 8,229? 1.2 million every year in America?
A friend postulated that probably half the room voted for Mr. Obama. I don’t know about half. But perhaps it was a healthy portion, including those that just stayed home. Where the rubber meets the road, where actions must speak louder than words, life failed. A portion of the faithful shriveled in despair or apathy – and we and our babies will pay the price.
But last night it was celebration and prayer. Camaraderie and singing of praises. Fox Valley Christians Unite[d] for Life.
The program lists 12 northeast Wisconsin pro-life organizations and 9 statewide pro-life organizations. I was surprised at that. No wonder the need for unity! And many, many churches represented.
It was an ecumenical night. Aaron Soto, pastor of Apostolic Truth Church emceed the evening; Pastor Bill Lenz from Christ the Rock shared a moving family testimony (Life is worthy!) and Green Bay Catholic Diocese Bishop David Ricken keynoted the dinner.
Prayer, compassion and yes, politics. Bishop Ricken:
To reverse Roe vs. Wade, we can’t do it by quoting the bible; it must be reversed constitutionally. It seems surely if there’s a will, we can find precedence to choose life. And from Appleton Alliance Pastor Dennis Episcopo’s closing prayer:
We pray that You will raise up more and more leaders who will defend life! Bishop Ricken spoke of the craftiness of pro-abortion advocates. “How sinister to boast of choice – and throw in the “right” to kill as if it were in the same breath as the right to liberty.” He asked what red-blooded American wouldn’t choose ‘choice?’, lamenting that the opposition’s ‘choice’ in life is indeed a choice for death, with “Pro-choice” now clearly a euphemism for abortion and death.
Be clear that we are in a battle – but a battle that must be waged in peace…. Peaceful engagement disarms violence. Peaceful opposition will win the day and life will reign. This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30:19, 20.
Check it out. Unite for Life.

Jo,
Did our newspaper really decline to cover this event?
In your opinion----will there be a time when our abortions will be looked upon as the greatest of Holocausts?

David (Fri Sep 25 08:09:22 2009)
David, it's what I was told separately by two members of the United for Life Executive Committee. Also searched this morning's Post-Crescent and saw no mention of the event - which doesn't mean it's not there, just that I couldn't find it.

Jo (Fri Sep 25 08:57:15 2009)
I didn't see the name of any, what might be termed, mainstream churches in your article, Jo.
Does this mean there were no representatives of these churches present? If there weren't, Jesus must be weeping.

C.R. Stevenson (Fri Sep 25 10:38:03 2009)
Lutherans for Life was there. Pastor Duane Matz of Living Word Lutheran (Association of Free Lutheran Churches) was there. Congregants from New Hope Lutheran (Neenah) and Peace Lutheran (Neenah), both Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, were there.

Harry (Fri Sep 25 11:12:21 2009)
"I didn't see the name of any, what might be termed, mainstream churches in your article, Jo."
I am pretty sure that Roman Catholics are still mainstream.
"and Green Bay Catholic Diocese Bishop David Ricken keynoted the dinner. "

Brian Dunbar (Fri Sep 25 13:59:33 2009)
Yes, exactly. Many Roman Catholic and Lutheran congregations were represented.

Jo (Fri Sep 25 14:25:15 2009)
A simple question, Jo... Should a woman who has been raped, or who has been the victim of incest, be entitled to obtain an abortion? Simple answer -- yes or no, please. Thanks!

Curious George (Fri Sep 25 16:40:09 2009)
A simple answer George, about life. It is blessed and worthy.

Jo (Fri Sep 25 20:07:09 2009)
Is that a no? The rape or incest victim must carry the child to term? Does the rapist have visitation rights? Must the rape victim take the baby to prison to visit Daddy? Jo's "family values" in action?

Curious George (Fri Sep 25 23:35:32 2009)
"Is that a no? "
What-if questions are fun: they are almost always asked in such a way that the questioner is bound to get the answer they are looking for.
In my world a question is asked for information, not to score rhetorical points.
"Is that a no? The rape or incest victim must carry the child to term? Does the rapist have visitation rights? Must the rape victim take the baby to prison to visit Daddy? "
Yes.
Yes.
No.
No.
Adoption takes care of all of the problems you bring up.
George, how do you feel about advocating murder? Would you pull the trigger? Inject the saline? Vacuum out the body?
