Two-parent families: The Gold Standard
Ryan Gruber, in all his wisdom, goes after Rep. Tom Petri for a comment he made during a presentation Saturday, pairing up with Senator Glenn Grothman. Gruber quotes a WisPolitics report which represented the goings-on of the day quite accurately.
Petri to crazies: Two bad parents better than one good one The normally milquetoast Representative from the 6th, Tom Petri, apparently took some hits out of the Kool-Aid bowl at the Future Wisconsin conference this weekend. I'm particularly intrigued by the following, courtesy of WisPolitics:
Petri and (Glenn) Grothman said there are counterproductive incentives in place with the current welfare system, including a failure to encourage women to get married.
A woman who gets married or takes a better paying job faces the loss of food stamps, housing assistance and tax credits.
Petri explained that if a woman marries a man with a decent income under the current system, she would no longer be eligible for hundreds of dollars in welfare money a month.
“We know that even a troubled marriage with two parents is better for children,” Petri said.
Yes, I'd much rather have kids in a home where they can learn skills like verbal confrontation and domestic violence.
There are single parents who do a terrible job raising their kids. Similarly, there are two-parent families that shock their kids with dog collars, shoot them with pellet guns, and perform cosmetic dentistry with hammers.
I get that perhaps Petri was pandering to his audience a little, but that doesn't excuse the absolutely stupidity of his argument. What matters most is that a child have a functional and loving environment in which to exist, whether that environment is provided by a mom and dad, or one or the other, or two moms or two dads, or even extended family.
Kind and respectful language, don’t you think? That aside, Gruber’s sarcasm is misplaced. Obviously, Grothman and Petri weren’t referring to abuse or violence in a home. I asked Amy Lewis from the Wisconsin Family Council to respond briefly:
Petri and Senator Grothman are right. Grothman has done the math for Wisconsin, and his work demonstrates that a single mother who, for example, has two children, earns $15,000 per year and then marries the father of her children (making $30,000 per year in this example), will lose tax-free government benefits after she marries, totaling over $37,000 per year.
It’s no wonder 41% of births in the U.S. last year were to unwed mothers!
Data clearly show our government incentivizes single-mother households which, on average, are the poorest nurturing environments for children; these government policies continue to create a cycle of welfare/state dependence.
In his talk, of course Rep. Petri was not talking about “troubled marriages” involving domestic violence, child abuse, substance abuse, etc. Common sense alone tells us those households are not good for children.
What Petri was speaking of is actually a documented, social science fact: Even unhappy marriages, where the parents stay together, are better for children on every measure than divorced or single-parent households.
The Heritage Foundation has an excellent collection of charts graphing how the two-parent family truly is the gold-standard for the health, happiness and future lives of children. Click here for the HTML version and here for the PDF.

Another stellar example of why government should simply stay outside the front door of our house.
Government should simply deal with affairs of state (defense, etc.) and provide an infrastructure without intervening in our lives. Just stay away from the front door of our house!
On the other hand, "we the people" need to exercise good moral judgment in our personal matters. Along with true freedom comes a good deal of personal responsibility ... like making decisions (on who you marry, how you handle difficult times or conflict, etc.) in a responsible and MORAL way.
Freedom isn't always pretty, sometimes your neighbor will do things you don't agree with or believe is 'right', but despite their best efforts - there's no way a government can regulate every last detail of what happens within your home ... nor would I WANT that.
Too bad Rep. Petri has decided to start meddling inside the home.

Jeff Riedl (Wed Oct 14 08:10:02 2009)
Yes, but here's the deal Jeff. Less stable family situations are more costly to government safety net programs. The data are replete with those facts. That means it impacts me as a taxpayer. (Maybe it should impact me more as a community member and church goer - but that's another conversation for other days.) So would you continue to have the state and federal governments incentivize (to the tune of $37,000 in the example Grothman used - and that's tax free - so what is it - a job earning $60,000 or something like that? Yikes) single motherhood? What's the answer?

Jo (Wed Oct 14 08:17:17 2009)
Jo, once again you nailed it. Thanks!

John Hyland (Wed Oct 14 08:54:52 2009)
Jo,
Sorry about the delay in responding - I have a sick kid home from school and that's a bit of a priority in this house.
You see, I take care of my kid - not the government. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
What you claim to be another story for another time is the central point of WHY I don't believe the government should even approach the front door of anyone's house. My belief is that WE are our brother's keepers - NOT WASHINGTON or MADISON.
I speak from an idealistic (and rather absolutist) point of view. It ain't government's job to provide that safety net program of which you speak ... it's OUR job. And I believe you'd see a whole lot more of "us" taking care of "us" if our checkbook wasn't raided each and every payday, not to mention every April 15th.
Yes, we should give Caesar what is his - but if we did right by our neighbors then Caesar wouldn't have to play the role of "Robin Hood" too.

Jeff (Thu Oct 15 21:21:34 2009)
Yup Jeff, I buy it. it's the implementation that gets bumpy. Damn. Get well wishes to your little one.
