    If not Barrett, who?

Last Friday, before Lt. Gov. Lawton made her surprise exit, WisPolitics threw out a few names.
Kevin Conroy [Third Wave Technologies and Exact Sciences] … has been considering a run for governor next year as a Dem if Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett doesn’t get into the race, according to multiple sources.

…Wisconsin Counties Association head Mark O’Connell continues to lay the groundwork for a bid.

…A series of other private sector names have floated in recent weeks as potential candidates, including the likes of former state lawmaker Jeff Neubauer, president and owner of Kranz Inc. in Racine, and John Noel of Stevens Point, founder and head of Travel Guard until he retired this spring. But it was unclear whether either of them had any real interest in the campaign or if their names had simply been added to some Dems’ wish lists of potential candidates.

…Others have been looking down the Dem bench to Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker. They say the Weston Dem could coalesce the base with his good connections to labor, teachers, enviros and the pro-choice crowd. But Decker said in an interview with WisPolitics.com this week that he’s content to continue representing his Senate district.

…Washington sources have been speculating that [Sen. Herb] Kohl may not run for re-election when his current term is up in 2012. What better way for Kohl, who will turn 75 in February, to cement his legacy in the Badger State, hopeful Dems say, than to come home and win an election for governor? [What?] But others say the guv's office would be ill-suited for the millionaire Bucks owner, who's comfortable in the Senate and his Milwaukee environs.

…Dane Co. Exec Kathleen Falk also continues to be considered an option, and she hasn't completely closed the door to a run. But some close to her suggest she'd have to be drafted into a campaign, and critics question her statewide viability after coming in third during the 2002 Dem guv primary and losing to AG J.B. Van Hollen in 2006.

How about Majority Leader Tom Nelson?
Nelson would not say if Lawton's withdrawal could influence his own interest in a run to succeed Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, who announced in August that he would not pursue a third four-year term.

"It's kind of hard to react to news that happened two hours ago," Nelson said, stressing his focus remains on the state's economic challenges.
Choices. I’d say Mayor Barrett is feeling the pressure to make his own choice….

Maybe the Dems won't run anyone, as a penance for what they have done to us the last 7 yrs. They DO NOT have to run anyone. It would sure save a lot of money.
