The Lawton-Bader files
Progressive commentator extraordinaire Bill Christofferson hits several nails on the head in his blog yesterday.
What radio talker Jerry Bader said on the air about Barbara Lawton is indefensible.
[But…] And you can bet the media will continue to find other sources to explain Lawton's decision. Maybe the Bader mess has put a lid on things. But no real reporter would be thrown off the scent by that circus.
It's highly unlikely that we have heard the end of the Lawton story. I'm just one of many who are curious about the real story, even if it turns out to be mundane.
If you’re one of those “curious about the real story,” below are several recent links to keep you up to date on the story – so when the “real story” about the Lawton mystery does break, you’ll be ready.

Kind of news and commentary

The bloggers have their say
So just why did Lt. Gov. and gubernatorial candidate Barbara Lawton drop out of the race of her lifetime? What do you think? Is the Bader suspension (essentially 3 weeks) appropriate? Should he be kept on by WTAQ? If so, will he be an effective communicator of the conservative message in the future?

Please... who cares? It's her decision and we should move on.
I'm disappointed because she is a strong supporter of Clean Elections. But so is Barrett. Walker is not. And with the government approval rate at just 23% you'd think that people would be asking why, and what can we do to change it.

Jack Lohman (Fri Oct 30 07:35:27 2009)
Tom Barrett is a strong supporter of Clean Elections? Most of us would need to be on some pretty heavy pain medication to reach that conclusion.

Tom McMahon (Fri Oct 30 08:03:25 2009)
Who cares? I care, that's who! And I care for two primary reasons:
1. I wanted to see Lawton as the only Democrat stupid enough to put his/her head in the noose for the 2010 political bloodbath. That way I could stop pouring money into Scott Walker's campaign after the primary. She's so far left that she's unelectable outside of Mad City.
2. As a person who believes in the Constitution of the U.S. and of Wisconsin, I'm very concerned that political hacks in the White House are telling us in Wisconsin who can, and who cannot, run for the office of Governor of our state. I guess I'm just one of those conspiracy theorists that believes Rahm Emmanuel and his cronies are trying harder to influence political outcomes than governmental effectiveness.
Bader, like a lot of talk show hosts, has to sell his product. Like the marketing people always say, "Any publicity is good publicity."

Duke (Fri Oct 30 08:06:10 2009)
Could Mr. Lohman explain what "Clean Elections," has to do with the subject at hand. But it is easy to see the peril that seemingly exists for Conservative media personalities. I only ask, would the same furor exist if a similar comment were made by the likes of Bill Maher or Jon Stewart? I doubt it.
Mr. Bader owes apologies, but is also owed a full investigation and vetting of his sources which were obviously questionable. And last I heard, we are innocent until proven guilty, so Midwest, put the man back to work, as I doubt the aforementioned Liberal personalities would have missed one day in the chair.
Does the name Letterman come to mind? Once again, the personal sexual trysts become the fodder for political machinations, but it doesn't answer the initial question, why did Ms. Lawton leave so quickly? Something scared her, or someone scared her big time. Will we ever find out the truth?

Richard Parins (Fri Oct 30 08:20:17 2009)
Richard, "Clean Elections" are vital to the growth of this state, and whether the next governor is prone to sign or veto the law should it ever reach their desk. It should be our top concern regardless of your party affiliation or whether the bribery is from a special interest you agree with or not.
Whatever the issue being discussed, money given to politicians is the driving force. Money is given because money works, but usually against the best interests of the public. Wonder why our taxes are so high? Follow the money!

Jack Lohman (Fri Oct 30 08:44:41 2009)
I have the real story. Lawton's issues of a personal nature? She did not want to lose.

Ken Van Doren (Fri Oct 30 08:46:17 2009)
So what if Lawton gets Bader's head, and later the allegations are proven true?

Ken Van Doren (Fri Oct 30 08:49:50 2009)
I think Ken hit on it. She did not want to lose. Does it have to be any more complicated than that?

Jack Lohman (Fri Oct 30 11:31:00 2009)
Even if true, I do not really need to know such details.
I think the most interesting part of this is James Wigderson's links to tweets by staff from WTMJ who seemed to be chomping at the bit to broadcast the story too.
Now, is the suspension of Jerry sufficient or harsh? I think it is about right. No station in its right mind would or should let such a lapse go unsanctioned. However, I have made it perfectly clear to WTAQ that firing Jerry would cause me to drop WTAQ from my listening routine.
