Will you be a true patriot and run for office?

Scott Ott is a friend. Well, he doesn’t know he’s a friend, but I’ve been following him around just because I like his stuff. Satire. Tough stuff to do right.

Ott started out on his own, best as I can tell, and about a year ago was picked up by the Washington Examiner. About the same time he was picked up by the big guns, he heeded the call to run for office. County Executive, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. All the while posting stuff on his site, ScrappleFace and in the Washington Examiner.
President Obama today announced his plan to add “choice and competition” to the World Series of Major League Baseball by adding a ‘public team’ to the traditional end-of-season championship duel.

….According to White House officials, the public option team will step in and replace any team that begins to lead its rival by more than two runs during any particular game in the series.

If a previously losing team should begin to run up the score on the public team, then it, too, shall be replaced by players on the public squad so fans can enjoy "reliable, accessible baseball."
Well, Scott lost his bid to unseat an “incumbent, 15-year politician,” 21,333 to 20,332.
… I want to thank the many people who voted yesterday in support of limited government and individual liberty, who rejected the idea that government must consume an ever-increasing portion of your income, and who sent a message that elected officials cannot spend more than they bring in, expecting the taxpayers to bail them out.

We stood up to an incumbent, 15-year career politician, who has higher ambitions -- a man who had raised more than $900,000 in his flirtation with a gubernatorial bid. We started with no money, and raised a bit more than $40,000, much of it in small amounts, without any of the traditional $5,000-$10,000 checks from wealthy donors.

We focused on issues, on the budget, and on the looming 2011 tax hike, and we never employed personal attacks. Dozens of volunteers gave generously and sacrificially of their time and money. They put their hearts into it. I'm humbled and grateful.
It is indeed so very humbling to be supported by volunteers , giving sacrificially of time and money, and of course, to have voters support one’s message and principles.

Ott wrote a piece to his ScrappleFace readers too, encapsulating for me, why we go through the craziness of campaigning, of putting oneself out there for all the world to see.
Today is election day. My run for Lehigh County Executive comes to a close. As I write this, I'm deeply humbled and grateful by the outpouring of support, prayer and sacrificial giving which has flowed from readers of ScrappleFace.com. No matter the outcome, we have run the race with integrity, focused on issues rather than personalities, and taken every opportunity to champion liberty. For those of you who feel called to run for office, but have thus far resisted...please, for the sake of our Constitutional Republic, follow the dictates of duty. But do so only if you have the full, joyful assent of your spouse. And through it all, recall there is a God who superintends in the affairs of men, raising up whom He will, and bringing low others as He pleases. Whatever my lot, He has taught me to say, it is well with my soul. It is a privilege to run for office in this great land. Should I win, it will be an honor to serve this God-blessed people, and to encourage them all and always to "Live the Freedom."
Local elections – county supervisors, city alderpersons, village trustees, town boards - are coming up in April. Nomination papers can be circulated starting December 1 and must be turned in no later than January 5, 2010. Partisan elections of course, are coming up in November, 2010. Nomination papers can be circulated for Assembly, State Senate and congressional seats starting June 1 and must be turned in no later than 5:00 p.m. July 13.

Will you run? Will you serve? Indeed, it is a privilege and an honor – to champion liberty.

No doubt we SHOULD. Particularly those of us who are rightfully concerned with the fiscal sustainability of our schools, our cities, our state and our nation.

I'm seriously looking at it - how about you, Jo?

I am a fan of anyone who has the guts to run. I have lost twice: once for Congress and once for a County Board and now I try to make others win. I may run for City Council in 2010. This time my slogan would be: No Worse than the Rest.

My family has to come first, but when they're all grown & flown, I'll seriously think about it...Jeff, you SHOULD.

Not confident enough of your own abilities to run? You probably sell yourself short.

Have other legitimate reasons NOT to run? As much as leadership, we need followership. Get behind one or more candidates, and do the best you can to get them elected. Give your money or your time, or better yet, both.

It can NOT be stressed enough what a pivotal year 2010 is. Just be sure you vote for people who do what they say, and will truly work for limited constitutional government, individual rights and fiscal responsibility.

    Jeff,

I have to ask and am not doing so with intent to slam or otherwise be hostile. Your question to Jo, are you being serious, sarcastic, or facetious?

I ask because Jo has run for and held public office.

    Jeff,

Again, more an FYI than anything else -- Jo has definitely walked the walk.
