Elections mean something
The successful Stupak-Pitts amendment? Representative Steve Kagen voted for federally-funded abortions, voting against the amendment. Voting for Stupak-Pitts from the Wisconsin delegation were Representatives Obey, Petri, Ryan and Sensenbrenner. Obey joined 63 other Democrats to pass the amendment 240 to 194. Desperate for about 39 of those votes on her final bill, Speaker Pelosi was finally forced to allow the amendment that bans the use of federal funding for abortions and prohibits the public option from covering abortion services.
Late Saturday, Kagen joined all but 39 of his fellow Democrats to pass the health “reform” bill that will, by some estimates, cost our grandchildren as much as $3 trillion (most informed estimates are more in the area of $1.3 - $1.5 trillion – still a bunch of cash). Kagen’s vote contributed to a very skinny 5 vote victory in the House, 220 – 215. Really a three vote difference. Three fewer Dems bought off with amendments. Or three more districts (in a universie of 435) held by a Blue Dog conservative.
(Be not worried. The Progressives are gearing up too. They want a little insurance on that skinny 5-vote margin – and aren’t at all excited about the 64 defectors on Stupak-Pitts. Time for Progressives to get rid of bad Democrats)
Imagine it. A three vote swing. Elect three more conservatives in the U.S. and Saturday night's vote may have been 217 – 218, defeating HR 3962. Elections mean something. How about one of those new conservatives coming from the 8th District in Wisconsin?
The Republican primary in the 8th could ultimately be a huge field – many from whom we voters can choose.
Paul Jadin, former Mayor of Green Bay. Current President of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. This is about the time Jadin said he’d be deciding; no decision yet, but looks like he may opt to continue to make a difference from where he is now.
Terri McCormick, former State Rep. in the 56th District, unsuccessful 8th Congressional District primary candidate. Owner of personal consulting business. Probably getting in the race before Thanksgiving.
Reid Ribble, Kaukauna business owner, fiscal conservative, not a politician. Knows his stuff. Doing a good job with fundraising.
Roger Roth, State Representative, 56th District. Finishing an Air National Guard tour of duty in Iraq. Home in a few weeks. All signs say he’ll be in the race soon.
Marc Savard, Door County Bd. of Supervisors, organic farmer. Minimal political experience. Bright. Minimal fundraising.
Kerry Thomas, a conservative out of Vilas County. In the past, a harsh critic of John Gard and an advocate for Terri McCormick.
Marc Trager, retired military radiologist in Green Bay. Could fight Kagen physician to physician.
Andy Williams, Brown County Supervisor, practicing attorney after recently earning his law degree.
Thoughts are that two or three others from the northern regions of the congressional district may get in as well.
Then there’s former Niagara Mayor Joe Stern who is dissatisfied with both parties and intends to run as a conservative independent.
And then there's the incumbent. If you were a betting man, would you bet on Kagen running again? I’m not hearing any noise from that quarter – are you?
Steve Kagen. A vote for federally funded abortions. A vote for massive overhaul of health care in America that Paul Ryan calls the third wave of Progressivism. FDR, Lyndon Johnson, Steve Kagen. Yup. Elections mean something.

COMMENTS
Jo,
I see Marc as much more than an Organic farmer. He is the one that started the Tea Party in Green Bay. He was the one that saw something go wrong and did something about it right away. He did not wait like the other ones until it got "bad enough", much like politicians are doing today. He is the leader of the Tea Party. He wants to bring the power back to the people and not to the ones at the capitol. He knows his leaders, us the American People.

Reid’s background as a small business owner sets him apart from the other candidates in the Republican primary. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Reid and believe he is an outstanding conservative. Reid is very focused on debt reduction, lowering taxes and creating jobs. I hope your readers will visit www.ribbleforcongress.com to donate or volunteer. And add their names to his growing list of supporters on Facebook.

FYI, I have interviewed the first three CD8 candidates to announce, and intend to interview the 2 that announced recently, as well as the 2 about to announce. Go here for comprehensive look at the candidates archives: I intend to interview all congressional candidates who accept my invite, and any incumbents who would like to be on also. Will ask all of them the same basic questions. Show is live, 8PM, M-F, www.revolutionbroadcasting.com,The Voice of Liberty.

Jo. I sure hope Terri runs and the National party keeps it's nose out till we select our cnaidate. I truly believe that Dr. Kagen would not be sitting in Washington today if they would have let us choose three years ago. I don't know if Terri would have won the primary; but I believe that the National Party's interference in the primary turned off enough voters to put Kagen in.

Bruce Sherman (Mon Nov 09 10:38:50 2009)
Yes elections mean something. But let me pull a couple arguments from my Tea Party speeches:
It is time that we recognize that Republicans are as much a part of the problems we face as Democrats. George W. Bush NEVER vetoed even ONE spending bill. His administration grew the government at near record rates. (see CATO for article) Bush and the turn coat Republicans who supported his agenda helped destroy both our economy, our liberty, and our constitution. The Republicans, by deserting what they SAID they believed in, set the table for Obama and the Democrats to clean up. And clearly, they are set to continue all the worst policies of the Bush administration, and make our problems worse. More spending, more taxes, even greater assaults on our liberty and our constitution, and quite possibly and assault on our sovereignty. So we have to get the Democrats out.
But to replace Democrat crooks with Republican ones is NOT progress. We have to be careful whom we elect, and be sure that they are true to the constitution, that they support freedom, that they will run the government in a fiscally responsible manner. And let us be clear, some incumbent Republicans are just as much a part of the problem as Democrats, if for no other reason than that they undermine what Republicans say the believe in with their votes in Congress. So let us challenge incumbents who support Big Government, regardless of which party they are in.
And let us support those candidates who support liberty and limited constitutional government, whether they are Republicans, independents, Constitution party members, Libertarians, independents, or for that matter, Democrats.
Or words to that effect...

Ken Van Doren (Mon Nov 09 11:03:27 2009)
Bruce- I suspect that you can trust the insiders to try to influence the election again. Apparently they would rather have a Kagan or a Bill Owens (NY23) than an independent voice that they can not control. The question is, how to play their interference into an advantage for whatever candidate you support. If ever there was a time that incumbency and insider wheeling and dealing was a disadvantage, I suspect that time is now. Ask 8 recalled former supervisors from Monroe County what they think on this subject.

Ken Van Doren (Mon Nov 09 11:09:02 2009)
I fear that elections mean NOTHING to those currently in power. After all the town-hall opposition all across the country, this is how they voted. We no longer live in a democratic republic, but in an oligarchy.

EMILY MATTHEWS (Mon Nov 09 14:58:20 2009)
Wow,
Interesting stuff.
One of the most interesting things to come out of NY23 is that there was an attempt to nationalize that election -- but when it comes down to it it appears Hoffman was remarkably ignorant of matters of local concern. Jim Geraghty from National Review's The Campaign Spot noted how he messed up terribly on an interview with one of the local papers.
While, I think it is critical for a candidate to be good on national security and other issues of national concern -- they need to understand the issues and needs of immediate concern to the constituency.

Marcus Aurelius (Mon Nov 09 22:42:43 2009)
Dr. Marc Trager is a very appealing candidate. He has military experience, is a doctor, and seems extremely bright and knowledgeable on the issues. He seems to be the only one out there talking about using new, innovative market based solutions to address problems with healthcare, spending, etc. He’s conservative on all the important republican issues, but also offers something we haven’t seen here in the district since Kagen took office: a listening ear to the constituents. I went to his GB announcement and talked to him afterwards....He has his stuff together.

John (Tue Nov 10 12:20:48 2009)
As a life-long Republican voter, I am looking forward to the 2010 elections. For the first time, I am researching early and often. ...am following all the candidates and reading about their backgrounds, beliefs and motivations.
This election will be different than in the past. Constituents are awake, alert, and they are not willing to follow any party blindly.

8th district constituent (Tue Nov 10 22:51:56 2009)
In an attempt to help all voters in WI get educated, and to give candidates a chance to inform voters of where they stand, I have, or will, invite all congressional candidates in WI to do my show. Usually I give them an hour, and as much of the second hour as they want. I have already interviewed the first 3 to announce in the 8Th, and will invite the next 3 or 4 or 5 or however many. Archives are here: Scroll down to "The Voice of Liberty." Show is live, M-F, 8PM at www.revolutionbroadcasting.com

Ken Van Doren (Wed Nov 11 11:23:32 2009)
"Then there’s former Niagara Mayor Joe Stern who is dissatisfied with both parties and intends to run as a conservative independent."
Great, another third party conservative. If most Mr. Stern can accomplish is to hurt the Republican candidate and give a third term to Mr. Kagen.
These conservative vs. moderate battles should be fought in the primary. We as conservatives need to take the fight into the GOP and win it back! Not take our ball and go home to run as a third party. All that does is elect socialist.

Rohn W. Bishop (Sat Nov 14 06:15:15 2009)
I was sorry to read that the race for Republican/Conservative/Independent candidate to unseat Dr. Kagen has gotten so crowded. I hate to see these people spend their time and resources [which they will appeal to us to supply] beating up on each other in order to get the chance to run against Kagen. Terri McCormick was a worthy opponent and gave John Gard a "run for his money". Too bad the Washington establishment chose to back John to the exclusion of Terry. I hope that some of the less viable contenders will back out and not dilute the conservative vote to unseat the do-nothing, follow the crowd, rubber stamping Dr. K. Take a note from Scott Walker and when there is someone running who has a good chance of winning and holds most of your beliefs, back down and let them run. The same can be said for Rep. Steve Wieckert who did the same thing so as not to dilute the vote.
