'Race to the Top' by fighting childhood obesity
Maybe the school board discussion wasn't as bad as I'm reading into it. First Sen. Robson brags about the tremendously diluted education "reform" bills getting pushed through the Senate. Then Rep. Benedict brainstorms - we need new sidewalks so kids can walk to school! Geeez.
Robson said in the Senate education is taking top priority and that Wisconsin has already taken steps in hopes of attaining funding from the Race to the Top Fund.
“We have had a series of bills so that we could be positioned for that money and it didn’t even have a public hearing in the senate, that is how fast it went,” she said.
Rep. Chuck Benedict, D-Beloit, told the school board he would like to see better diets in the schools and more physical education to address childhood obesity. Other ideas included expanding sidewalks to possibly increase exercise, encouraging students to walk to school and exploring the possibility of substituting an after school sport for school credit. All are ways that could help combat childhood obesity, Benedict said.
“Maybe we could make the Beloit schools a model for that,” Benedict said.
Benedict stated that helping to prevent an issue like childhood obesity could be a chance to exercise some innovative programming which could possibly help the district’s chance in the Race to the Top Fund.
