    A day of Thanksgiving

Our nation's first national Day of Thanksgiving was offered up immediately after the Congress, capping years of struggle, proposed to the state legislatures a Bill of Rights on September 25, 1789. Having been proposed to the states, the controversy-filled package of amendments was not finally ratified by the 11th state until December 15, 1791, when our nation's Bill of Rights finally went into effect.

Perhaps thankful in part that the long struggle toward a Constitution and finally the long-promised and contentious Bill of Rights had achieved one more plateau, Elias Boudinot, lawyer from New Jersey, offered up a resolution directing the "President of the United States to recommend to the people... a day of public thanksgiving and prayer."

I pray we in America may continue to peaceably assemble, to petition our government at any time for a redress of our grievances. I pray Congress shall not abridge my freedom of speech or my right to publicly worship my God. I pray for the integrity of our famed justice system. I pray we in America, so profoundly blessed by an abundance of natural resources and a pioneering spirit, will retain our undying spirit of innovation and individual responsibility. And I pray for blessings and abundance for you and your family in this land of vast original freedoms and liberties.
