    11/30/2009
Ok. December 1 is the day. Just do it.

Calling all tea-partyers – and everybody else living in these environs! Local elections – county supervisors, city alderpersons, village trustees, town boards, school boards – are coming up in April. Nomination papers can be circulated starting Tuesday, December 1 and must be turned in no later than January 5, 2010.

So December 1 is the first day you can “take out papers” as the old timers say – or the day that nomination papers and other campaign registration forms are available in the appropriate clerk’s office. It’s the day you can begin to collect nomination signatures – as few as 20 for a place on the ballot in an Appleton City Council election. You must be 18 years old and live in the district you would represent.

The timeline is for all elections that will be held April 6, 2010 (or if a primary is needed, February 16, 2010) – nonpartisan, local elections. In the city of Appleton, that’s all even-numbered districts (Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16). Every seat (36 Supervisors) on the Outagamie County Board is up for election. Every seat on the Calumet County Board (21 Supervisors) is up for election. Every seat on the Winnebago County Board (36 Supervisors) is up for election. And two of the seven district-wide seats on the Appleton Board of Education (those occupied now by Jeff Knezel and Julie Baker) are up for election.

Here are the City of Appleton district maps, here’s how to find what district you’re in. Similar information is available on the Web for most counties, towns and villages.

(Appleton’s “finding your district” page is a fairly new tool – pretty cool. Type in your address, click on the “Property ID” that comes up, then click on the “Government” tab. More information than you ever knew! Other tabs include information like your garbage day, your leaf pick up day, and the public schools in your area. Wow.)

Knock on doors. Find every way you can to get your message across. Is it work? Yeah, sure it’s work – and yes, it takes time – and sometimes for these spring elections, it’s darn cold campaigning in blustery January, February and March. But it’s very rewarding stuff – essentially talking to your neighbors over countless cups of coffee. Do it. Make a difference. Holler if you need more information!
