That ah-ha moment when your kids see how much the government takes
There is hope – a moment in every parent’s life when a child sees one of those bright rays of light.
It happened to me the other day. My almost-33 year-old wonderful daughter is finally out in the real world after years of schooling and residency. She is slowly but surely paying off huge med school loans and has talked with us about her budget and – hallelujah – a 401K!
If forced to label her political persuasion, I’d have to say it’s pretty far left. Many friends have heard my story of when Tish was a little girl and would get mad at me, she would point and shake one forefinger, and as threateningly as a little girl can, pipe out, “When I grow up, I’m going to be a Democrat!”
For sure. She is. But maybe not forever….
In a quick call from Tish at work, I learned she was working an extra long overnight shift at the hospital – and was pretty tired. But out of mouths of liberal kids…”Well, that’s ok Mom. I earned an extra $___ tonight – but of course, that’s pre-tax.” (Emphasis is mine.)
Oh my gosh. She’s getting it. Seeing a huge difference between her contract and gross pay and the amount that ends up in her bank account. Yup, out of the mouths of babes. It happened to me. Pretty neat.

Jo,
I'm happy to see I'm not the only conservative who has raised liberal children. Mine are so liberal that I confidently told my fiance' that I hoped two of them would lose their jobs. They both need a kick in the butt. And, my oldest did!! But, alas, her political views haven't changed. Then there is my son. I'm afraid he is lost forever. He is "hooked up" with a young lady who works for the Federal Government and they both live in Madison. I will forever need to find extra voters to make up for the votes my children cast. I point out to them that they will later pay for the political decisions they make God help them. Thanks for sharing.

My oldest had her ah-ha moment at age 7!
I was teaching my children *why* I disagree with the president and his minions by giving a simple example.
I told the three of them they could earn $6 by cleaning the living room. Since the three of them all cleaned it, they earned $2 each. I then gave the example that one of them cleaned it, but other two played with race cars instead of helping. So, I gave the person who cleaned it $6 and then took $4 and redistributed it to the other two. I made each of them the person that cleaned the living room for full effect. They all responded, "That's not fair!" when they were the person who cleaned the living room and the other two just collected the rewards earned by the cleaner.
I then asked them, "what is REALLY the problem with this type of situation". My 7 year old .. SEVEN .. replied, "Why would you *EVER* be the person who cleaned the living room!?"
Bingo.

One thing I have always said is that the American public should DEMAND that our taxes not be taken from our payroll checks.
This one change would help immensely.

Wow. "Why would you ever want to be the one cleaning the living room?" Thanks for sharing. Oh my.

Jo,
Congrats on your daughter getting through med school. But, we pay taxes so your daughter could get through med school. Unless you paid for her entire education from kindergarten on up sooner or later it was all of us contributing to the environment that allow a bright, hardworking person like your daughter to succeed. We also paid for the streets she used to get to school and the volunteer military that achieved wider goals so her schooling could proceed uninterrupted. And, since we need more primary care physicians in this country but so many qualified candidates can't afford to go and don't have parents as generous or as capable as you have been perhaps some of your daughter's taxes should go to helping them along? If perhaps you had been disabled and destitute it is likely that your care would have been at taxpayer's expense. The alternative
could be that your daughter would need to stay to care for you regardless of her abilities. We should pay taxes for the larger public good and economic growth that comes from those taxes. And by and large (wasteful wars excepted) that is largely what happens.

Whatever amount was taken it is still only a portion of the cost of government. Add in costs of compliance with government mandates, and our REAL "tax" rate is over 60%, ALL of which is built into the costs of goods and services.
How is this for a stimulus: Cut government in half, you almost double the effective take home pay of everyone.
