How to fix health care – just like lasik surgery
Reason TV answers the right questions. 9 minutes of your time.
“Make no mistake about it. Health care reform is coming.”
But what’s the best way to fix our health care system, which is an inefficient, complicated mess of private actors, third-party payers, public subsidies, and innumerable state and federal regulations? Should we place our faith in the government or in the free market?

It is private enterprise run amok for services that on the whole that do not respond to supply/demand in our employer paid health care system that has created this mess. You cannot compare Lasik, a non-covered choice to needed care. On the contrary, if you want real competition the level playing field that is established with single payer systems forces companies to compete where it is effective. None of the other western countries eliminate private enterprise, not even close. But what they do is force real competition in the exact area that you point to, individual services (MRIs, Cat scans, drugs etc). All our system does is pass the buck and shields the buck passing behind layers of companies and bureaucracy.

Running to Madison Dave, so don't have any time to comment - only to note that "single payer systems" and "compete" in the same sentence is oxymoronic. What am I missing?

Jo, I will respond. with facts about how other countries allow private and government systems side by side. Yes, competition and regulation. Kind of like how roads are built.
