    Jobs or not, Barrett underwhelming

He looks like a very nice guy. Wisconsin born and raised, all they way – with parents that met literally on Bascom Hill. The Wisconsin State Journal captures his speech pretty well:
Barrett addressed the audience earlier in the day. He spoke of his family's deep roots in Wisconsin and said he's running for governor because it's time Madison "had some adult supervision."

The mayor said his focus would be on jobs, repeating the word five times for emphasis. [Literally, “Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs.”] Barrett said he would rely on the same strategy he used when he persuaded Republic Airways to keep 800 jobs in Milwaukee County and bring hundreds more after it acquired Midwest Airlines: tax credits.

….Barrett said as mayor he covered an unexpected $49 million pension expense by making cuts, often unpopular, in other areas. He could have done the simple thing by paying the cost through borrowing, but that would have just shifted the burden to taxpayers' kids and grandkids, he said.
Ok, so this was a large room full of Wisconsin business people – not Mayor Barrett’s natural constituency I suppose. Kudos to Barrett for attending in the first place, to claim he was “the only candidate in this race for the last six years to create jobs.” It’s “not something that comes new to me – as the governor of this state I will do everything I can to create jobs.”

(A Walker-blogger’s take on Milwaukee’s victory in bringing Ingeteam to Wisconsin. Barrett claimed credit in his speech – Aaron Rodriguez would dispute that.)

Barrett committed to a 3-point program to address the state’s dreadful budget situation:
    1. See which programs are working and which aren’t. If it’s not working, scrap it; if working, put more meat on its bones.
    2. Look seriously at the Tax Code and how it limits business investment in our state.
    3. Look seriously at spending – Barrett went on here to describe his solution, mentioned above, to the $49M pension problem – vs. the “County, that borrowed the money” they were short.
I didn’t stay to hear Scott Walker’s speech; I’m sure it was filled with a bit more fire. I’m not sure it contained any more legitimacy on the job creation front.
Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker announced Tuesday that he has a plan to create 250,000 jobs and bring 10,000 new businesses to the state by the end of his first term as governor.

.… Walker… boldly promised to create thousands of jobs by lowering the tax burden on corporations and individuals. His plan to create 250,000 jobs in Wisconsin also included a fazing out of taxes on retirement income, a cap on property taxes, lowering the regulatory burden for business and tort reform.
The Wisconsin State Journal notes that the event moderator read a statement from candidate Mark Neumann, who had a scheduling conflict and was unable to attend the WMC event.
"Folks, you've all done great work and are a very important part of keeping great jobs in Wisconsin," the statement said. "As governor I look forward to working closely with your organization."
I for one am tired of hearing about the state creating jobs – but we best get used to it.

FYI - Steve Eggleston reviews a recent Rasmussen poll – perhaps continuing to lag several percentage points behind both Walker and Neumann will get Mayor Barrett excited.

You must have felt right at home in the presence of an "underwhelming" candidate, Jo. Quite similar to your performance as a candidate in 2008, no?

Ooh, coming out swinging Mr. or Ms. Anonymous. What exactly did you think was underwhelming about the 2008 campaign or candidacy? After a half million dollars worth (in an Assembly race?) of negative advertising against me, unlike my opponent, I at least out-polled my party's presidential candidate by a significant margin.... How is that underwhelming? Rules of the game: Be nice, be constructive, be courteous, or you don't get published.

Perhaps so, Jo, but now you're back ranting here.
