Zipperer: Wisconsin must respond to health care bill

As you know, yesterday the House of Representatives passed historic legislation that vastly expands federal government control of health care in our country. Unfortunately the bill passed 219-212, following almost a year of heated debate and arm twisting. While the bill was approved by Congress yesterday, and is likely to be signed by President Obama in the near future, this struggle is far from over. And we can't let it be over.

I believe the only appropriate response is to recommit to the ideals that have made our country great. That is why today I joined many of my colleagues in the legislature to seek Attorney General JB Van Hollen's opinion on the constitutionality of the legislation, and to ask him to take all available action to stop what I believe to be an unconstitutional bill. In order to join with other states challenging the bill in court, Wisconsin law requires that the Attorney General first be asked by the Assembly, Senate, or the Governor to do so. To accomplish this, some of my colleagues and I in the Assembly are working on a resolution that would authorize our Attorney General to join the efforts already underway by several states challenging the bill.

I also joined another resolution today that would reaffirm within Wisconsin's Constitution that the state government cannot force the citizens of Wisconsin to purchase health care insurance, and that people have the right to enter into private contracts with private health care and health care insurance providers.

While having access to affordable health care and insurance is important, unfortunately the current debate is not on that issue. Instead the debate has been driven to the left by President Obama and Speaker Pelosi, and is now focused on government control versus individual rights. It's time to defeat the national health care bill, and return to a real debate, from the halls of Congress to state legislatures, on how to best reduce the cost of health care and make it accessible for more Americans. That's a debate that would see broad bipartisan support, from lawmakers and from everyday citizens, unlike the current debate which has polarized our nation.

Rich Zipperer is a Republican and represents the residents of the 98th Assembly District.
