Washington County gets an A+. Wow.

Ziegler definitely didn’t suffer from the Al-Gore-lose-in-your-backyard syndrome in her 58% win. Washington County came out big for their girl. Where Attorney Linda Clifford won 47,239 to 30,981 in her BIG Dane County backyard (a win by 16,258 votes), little Washington County did almost as well, piling up a 15,865 vote margin for Ziegler, 21,173 to 5,308. Wow. Good for them.

A late-night blogger, thrilled with the Ziegler victory shared his thoughts with FoxPolitics:
“Hurray! Judge Ziegler won! I think Ziegler's campaign did an adequate job of handling the attacks (unlike another campaign I was close to, one that took the attacks with a deer in the headlights approach). Not only that, they refused to passively take the darts and pulled out some of their own. I cannot recall hearing one Clifford ad talking about why she should get the job.”

To that mini-analysis, I say hear, hear! (I think the “deer-in-the-headlights” approach our commenter refers to here might be last fall’s Gard campaign.) It’s refreshing to see that Judge Ziegler’s immediate, but mature and professional (granted, sometimes visibly working to restrain herself) response to attacks was effective. Ok, new spending records in a Supreme Court race. New records for mud and muck. But perhaps a turn toward demureness as opposed to bitterness. Good.

Interesting to hear media responses last night – the vast majority of organizations having endorsed Clifford due to Ziegler’s “shameful (or fill-in-the-blank for whatever other adjectives were used) ethical practices.” I anxiously await the Judicial Commission’s discussion/ruling pursuant to their April 20 meeting. Anyway, last night’s WPR newsman presented an interesting study as he announced the AP had just called the race for Ziegler, and observed that the judge was expected any moment to appear to claim victory before her supporters. Then he couldn’t resist commenting editorially – something like “I wonder if Judge Ziegler will say anything about whether or not she will recuse herself from court cases that may impact West Bend Savings.” Give me a break. Sounds like a sore media loser to me.

Talk about sore losers…. Word is there’s a sign on the lawn of a former alderperson in these parts. An alderperson who lost her seat two years ago to the now incumbent alderperson. Reportedly the sign says “Anyone but  **  ”  (**Incumbent's name used on sign, but not here, to protect the innocent – if there are any innocents in a situation like this….) And here’s another one – opponent’s wife chased by mayor after snatching campaign sign. Geez.

Congratulations to Mike Marsden, the winner in the battle to retain his seat in Grand Chute. The Post-Crescent made a dumb editorial call on this one. You either love this guy or hate him, but he is 100% committed to his job – and the electorate knows it. We need more like him.

Many, many thanks to all of you candidates (and referendum supporters or opposers) out there who ran the hard race – and didn’t come out on top. It’s crushing to have worked so hard! I know it’s very little consolation, but all of you candidates – winners and losers alike – are the very stuff this great democracy is made of. Mushy but true. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Jo - another terrific article. There have been so many good ones that I feel a little selfish for not posting a 'Good Job' or 'Great Work' comment more often. Thank you and keep it up!
