    MPS namby-pamby ‘reforms’

MPS “reform” should not require an Act of Congress. Or an act of the Wisconsin Legislature for that matter. Just do it, for gosh sakes. As reported by WisPolitics in its Friday Report and by the Journal Sentinel Sunday, a bill to make reforms perceived as necessary for the state’s next Race to the Top application is making headway in the legislature.

    From WisPolitics:
Doyle signaled last week that the superintendent powers bill would be an important piece for round two of Race to the Top, adding teachers would have to buy in to the proposal.

"I think we're really going to have find a way that we really have buy-in from the union. That's going to be tough to do, but we're going to talk and see if we can work this through and get it done," Doyle said.
Well, you can believe union “buy-in” has watered down the bill to be just about worthless.

MacIver published the preliminary draft of this education reform package late last night. Unbelievable namby-pamby stuff. Pabulum. If a school is really bad, (in the lowest performing 5% of all public schools in the state and in a school district “in need of improvement for 4 consecutive years” – oh my gosh) it really gets the evil eye – and is forced to:

Establish teacher and principal improvement programs that include all of the following:
    • Supplemental mentoring for those with emergency licenses or permits.
    • Opportunities to pursue other provessional certifications, incuding certification by the Naitonal Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
    • Annually, at least 60 hours of professional development incorporated into their work.
    • A joint labor-manatement program designed to objectively identify teachers and principals who continue to demonstrate serious performance deficienies after opportunities for improvement…
Oh my gosh. I’d be trembling. There’s much more to these weakened so-called solutions. Check out the full package, pages 2 - 6 of the .pdf.

Owen Robinson details the reforms listed by Alan Borsuk in the Journal Sentinel article – and hits the nail on the head.
Why is this something that requires legislation? Shouldn’t the school board and MPS administration be doing this? It’s gross mismanagement that they haven’t.
Michelle Rhee, we need you! Frances Gallo, you too.

    COMMENTS

A deceased friend of mine used to say that government indoctrination centers (aka "public schools") ARE successful. They WANT to dumb down the population, tell them WHAT to think, not teach them HOW to think.

Given the wrong "progressive" mindset of schools, government officials and news media trained by them, an agenda that is destroying our country, given inertia and the union opposition to all meaningful reform, not sure MPS or GIC's in general can or even should be "saved."
