    Equal access to wealth? What?

Is it “liberty and justice for all?” “Equal opportunity for all?” Or is it “We want to make sure people are getting equal access to wealth.”
The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority is trying to prevent its hiring and contracting standards from disappearing when control of state government changes hands.[**]

A bill that received public hearings Monday and Tuesday requires the agency ensure minority- and women-owned companies work on projects that receive tax credits and that people living near the developments get construction jobs. The bill also encourages developers applying for the tax credits to recruit and train inexperienced protégés to get hands-on experience.

“The generation and the accumulation of wealth is a good thing in our society. There’s nothing wrong with that,” said Antonio Riley, WHEDA executive director. “But we want to make sure that people are getting equal access to wealth.”
    Wow. Ponder that.

**Apparently Riley sees the writing on the wall – state government not only “changing hands” but changing parties and philosophies. Dems are rushing to batten the hatches against a new Republican administration in the statehouse – James Wigderson points out they see it coming.
The Assembly took a poll tonight on who is likely to be the next governor…

[Passing] a resolution to curb the veto powers of the governor on a party-line vote, 50-48. Only Democrat Bob Ziegelbauer voted with the Republicans not to limit the governor’s veto power. Rep. Annette Polly Williams did not vote.

I guess the Democrats think the next governor is likely to be a Republican.

If the resolution passes both houses in the next legislative session, the constitutional amendment would go to referendum. Change – it is upon us.

Yep - that's about as bigoted as it gets.

I can't imagine a similar bill that mentions men or whites even getting considered by a committee, much less lasting a day without all kinds of press about how outrageous the idea would be.

But this isn't about "equality" ... not a bit - it's about picking favorites. Let's just call it what it is - bigotry against me and anyone who looks like me.

I would suggest that Change has been upon us for some time - we are just seeing it really start to bear fruit... sour fruit.

That said, two things come to mind that I've never been able to understand:

    1. How people fail to see the INSULT of special treatment for minorities, as though they are inept at making their own way. Have there been injustices? Of course. You don't keep someone on crutches or wheelchairs forever unless they're completely hopeless to walk again.

    2. "Women and minorities are encouraged to apply." It's bad enough to operate with a mindset that minorities are weak and inept. We're going to extend that insult to one whole sex - half the human race?

Maybe I'm naive, but I just don't see it. Yes, there will always be some people with lame prejudices. But is that the standard we want to operate on?

Andrew, very good points. I've said that very thing myself in quite a few posts on the internet.

It is as Geo. W. Bush said, "The soft bigotry of low expectations". People included in these generalized groups should fight back because it is demeaning.

For a bunch of people trying to make people feel good about themselves, liberals sure take an odd way to show it.

For the most part it isn't about access to wealth anyhow. It's about swapping gifts for votes. It's a symbiotic relationship. I give you a headstart in any job or whatever educaton you want and you give me your vote because I'm the font of plenty. See? It's simple. Many of those receiving the largesse have no idea of the disrespect involved.
