Finally, the people matter. But which people?

I regularly read the work of Progressive extraordinaire and unceasing campaigner Chris Bowers. I don’t agree with his point of view a single iota, but appreciate his political acumen and writing skills.

Well, I take that back. I do agree with a couple of his words – “Primaries Matter.” Indeed.

From today’s Chris Bowers post on Open Left:
Tonight, for the first time ever, two incumbent Democratic Senators failed to win primaries in a single day. That has never happened before, and is greater than the number of incumbent Democratic Senators who lost primaries over the past decade combined. Further, both challengers had little to no establishment support (especially Sestak), and one was in a red state (Halter). Most importantly, both challengers took on the incumbents from the left.
Ok, Bowers, the Progressives’ Progressive, is understandably pleased about those challenges from the left.
The bottom line from all of this it that Democrats have to answer to the grassroots everywhere now.
As if they haven’t been listening? Wow.

But of course, that’s exactly the obvious message from the Rand Paul victory, perhaps as far right as Bowers is far left.
“People are already saying, now you need to weave and dodge,” [Rand Paul] said. “Now you need to switch. Now you need to give up your conservative message. You need to become a moderate. You need to give up the Tea Party. You need to distance yourself.” The crowd yelled “No!”

…. “They ought to pay close attention to the grass roots,” the elder Mr. Paul said. “When Rand talks about the Tea Party movement, it’s the same as saying talking to the grass-root people. And get rid of the power people, the people who run the show, the people who think they’re above everybody else. That’s what the people are sick and tired of, that’s the message.”
Whose grassroots will win in November? Almost regardless who wins, how will the far left and the far right govern together? (Most pundits I read are trepidatious about the Brits’ current experiment with same.)

    COMMENTS

TAke heart dear Jo. Gridlock is good. If government can not do right, let it do nothing at all.

And other than repeal the misnamed "Affordable Health Care Act," which is in reality economic suicide and a great threat to our liberties, there is not much I want the government to do, except get out of the way.
