Nanny State Update: Cellphone radiation labeling required

Upholding its maverick (?) image, San Francisco voted Tuesday to require all cellphone retailers to display their “specific absorption rate.” This from the administration of Mayor Gavin Newsom, the same guy who believes "It makes sense for the government to help people to make the right choices…” when considering trans fat in foods or sugar in soda and fruit drinks.
The law — believed to be the first of its kind in the nation — came despite a lack of conclusive scientific evidence showing that the devices are dangerous, and amid opposition from the wireless telephone industry, which views the labeling ordinance as a potential business-killing precedent.

.... Under the law, retailers will be required to post materials — in at least 11-point type — next to phones, listing their specific absorption rate, which is the amount of radio waves absorbed into the cellphone user’s body tissue. These so-called SAR rates can vary from phone to phone, but all phones sold in the United States must have a SAR rate no greater than 1.6 watts per kilogram, according to the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates the $190 billion wireless industry.

But John Walls, a spokesman for C.T.I.A. - The Wireless Association, a trade group, said that forcing retailers to highlight that information might actually confuse consumers into thinking “some phones are safer than others.”

“We believe there is an overwhelming consensus of scientific belief that there is no adverse health effect by using wireless devices,” Mr. Walls said, “and this kind of labeling gets away from what the F.C.C.’s standard actually represents.”

Let me get this straight, you are saying that providing information to consumers is wrong?

I am saying mandating retailers to provide information with no scientific basis, above and beyond, and contradicting, ample federal standards, is not the role of local government. It is not the place of onerous governmental regulations to take the place of individual responsibility. Nice to see someone else is up and at it in these early morning hours!

Jo, Right On (mostly). Do you remember the stickers that were (are?) on gas pumps. "warning do not use cell phones or other mobile devices while dispensing gasoline as the vapors may ignite due to static discharge" or words to that effect. Totally based on an urban legend about someone going up in flames. Bogus yet everyone reacted hysterically. I can just imagine someone with a lit cigarette puffing away while gassing up and the warning about cell pones gets posted on the pump. Crazy. The only objection I have to your response to Dean is that individuals do need accurate information about real risks that they otherwise would not be aware of and regulations assist in that. It is not realistic that the consumer should have to figure it all out themselves.
