Grothman: Misguided MPS Resolutions to Boycott Arizona

Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) pleaded one more time for Milwaukee politicians on both the county board and school board to take a deep breath before declaring economic war on Arizona by boycotting their companies and conventions. The Milwaukee County Board is scheduled to vote on a boycott resolution on Thursday morning, and the Milwaukee Public Schools Board will vote that evening on a similar resolution.

“For Milwaukee to tell fellow Americans living in Arizona that you want to throw them out of work because you’d rather buy products from China, Vietnam, or other places is very dangerous. This is the type of precedent that will tear at the very fabric of our nation,” said Grothman.

“I would also encourage both boards to get legal advice as to the constitutionality of this action under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” said Grothman. “It seems fairly well settled that states and cities cannot interfere with interstate commerce.”

Grothman again encouraged all Wisconsin citizens to sign a petition to be sent to Arizona apologizing to them for the hateful actions of Milwaukee area politicians at www.weresorryarizona.com.

“You should sign the petition regardless of whether you are for or against Arizona’s new law. Our country will unravel if we boycott other states whenever we disagree with their actions,” said Grothman. “Imagine Arizona boycotting Harley-Davidson motorcycles. With their lack of respect for tolerance and diversity of opinion, the radical political leaders of Milwaukee are proving to be a real embarrassment to the entire state.”

Glenn Grothman is a Republican and represents the residents of the 20th Senate District (West Bend).

    COMMENTS

I agree that boycotting AZ is crazy and it is certainly misguided. As a homeowner and winter resident of the area just south of Phoenix on the "railroad" line from Mexico to the drop houses in the Phoenix, I must tell you that these people are problematic. They are drug dealers, human smugglers and the are tremendously taxing the welfare/social system on the area. They enter the US ILLEGALLY. If they do get a job, they most likely work "off the books" thus not paying taxes that support the services that they utilize. Go to an ER in the area and you will see DOZENS of undocumented people who need care and those who do have medical needs and most often insurance to pay, have to wait hours to be seen. ER's are much more expensive that Immediate Care but IC's don't have to treat them if they are undocumented while ER's do. Talk to a Birthing Center nurse and you'll discover that over 1/2 of their census on any given day are women who are illegal and come across the border just to birth their child thus the child is a citizen and because of that, their parents [and siblings] can become citizens. This is just not right. In addition, the children of the illegals are overcrowding our school system and because they cannot speak English, we are required to teach English as a second language. Often these kids have not had prior education so the schools have to place them in a remedial program. They sometimes are not fed breakfast before school, so they qualify for free breakfast and lunch. There is even a program in our school district where they can come during the summer for 2 FREE meals a day, 6 days a week [No Sunday]. Not all of the people who qualify for the free food are illegals but I believe that over 65% are. Not everyone who goes to the ER and cannot pay are illegals but a majority are. If they are residents, they'd qualify for Medicaid; illegals don't. As the old saying goes...don't judge before you've walked a mile in the other person's moccasins.

The Federal government is preparing to file suit against AZ because they are taking things into their own hands BECAUSE the Federal government hasn't done their job. The laws passed are almost identical to the Federal law.

KUDOS to Governor Brewer. I applaud her and believe she will stick to her principals knowing that over 75% of Arizonians agree/support her. It may surprise you to know that the citizens of Mexican and South American descent are supportive of Gov. Brewer vs. supportive of the illegals. They don't want to be associated with them.
